Tsilavo is a Palynologist and he holds a PhD in Palaeoecology. His research integrates palaeoecology and aerobiology to investigate environmental change in Southern Africa, spanning long-term Quaternary ecosystem dynamics and contemporary airborne pollen and fungal-spore patterns. It entails exploring the interaction between ecosystems and their associated drivers, including anthropogenic and climatic, through the interpretation of multiple proxies.
