Police seize 190 kg opium, arrest smuggler in Afghanistan's Takhar

KABUL, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Afghan counter-narcotics police, in the latest drive against illegal drugs, seized 190 kg of opium type drugs and took into custody the smuggler in northern Afghanistan's Takhar province on Saturday, provincial police spokesman Qari Naqibullah Masroor said Sunday.

The alleged drug smuggler, according to the official, placed the contraband in the cavities of a vehicle and wanted to traffic it to an unknown destination.

Without providing more details, the official asserted that the suspected drug smuggler, who is in police custody, would be handed over to the judiciary after completion of preliminary investigation.

The counter-narcotics police have intensified the crackdown on illegal drugs, as police also reported the discovery of 484 kg of opium in Takhar's neighboring Kunduz province a day earlier.
