I have been a Hebrew Studies university professor in the USA and UK for 30 years now. I study the stories Israel tells about itself—through literature, film, and culture. My work traces the birth of modern Hebrew culture in early 20th‑century Palestine/Eretz Israel and follows its echoes into the present. I write on everything from Zionism and orientalism to homoeroticism in Hebrew fiction, from the post‑Zionist 1990s to the shifting portrayals of gender, ethnicity, and religion on Israeli screens. At the heart of it all is a fascination with how language, literature, and cinema create—and challenge—cultural identities in Israel and the Middle East.
