Reiner Jumpertz-von Schwartzenberg

  • Professorship for Clinical Metabolism and Obesity Research, University Hospital and Medical Faculty, University of Tübingen

Reiner Jumpertz-von Schwartzenberg is a researcher and clinician specialising in clinical metabolism, obesity, and diabetes. His research centres on understanding the mechanisms underlying the development, treatment, and remission of metabolic diseases, with a particular emphasis on the interactions between the gut microbiome and host metabolism. His work aims to uncover how nutrient absorption and gut microbial composition influence metabolic health, obesity, and diabetes.

Since May 2022, he has held the position of Full Professor for Clinical Metabolism and Obesity Research at the University of Tübingen's Medical Faculty, in collaboration with the Helmholtz Zentrum München. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he serves as a senior physician in the Department of Diabetology, Endocrinology, and Nephrology at the University Hospital Tübingen. He also leads the Clinical Study Center at the Institute for Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases of the Helmholtz Zentrum München. Prof. Dr. Jumpertz-von Schwartzenberg heads a Helmholtz Young Investigator Group and leads a Junior Research Group within the Cluster of Excellence "Controlling Microbes to Fight Infections" (CMFI) in Tübingen

Prof. Dr. Jumpertz-von Schwartzenberg earned his medical degree from the universities of Bochum and Leipzig, completing his doctorate in 2012. He underwent clinical training at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin, becoming board-certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, and diabetology between 2011 and 2021. His early research focused on the interplay between diet, metabolism, and the gut microbiome, supported by Germany's first clinician-scientist program.

He further expanded his expertise during research visits to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA and the University of California, San Francisco, gaining in-depth knowledge in clinical trial design and basic translational microbiome science

Prof. Dr. Jumpertz-von Schwartzenberg actively contributes to public understanding of metabolic health and microbiome research. He has appeared in media outlets such as the SWR's "Doc Fischer" series, discussing topics like the impact of sweeteners on health
