Marion Carey

Dr Marion Carey is a public health physician specialising in environmental health. Her past experience has encompassed environmental health, communicable disease control, and indigenous health. She held a VicHealth Research Fellowship in Climate Change and Health at the Monash Sustainability Institute, and has been Program Leader for the Monash Climate, Biodiversity and Health Program. Prior to this, she worked in the Victorian Department of Human Services as Senior Medical Adviser in Environmental Health to the Chief Health Officer and Director of Public Health. There she was involved in the response to the 2009 heatwave and bushfires, and took a lead role in developing new areas of research and policy in relation to the health impacts of climate change. She developed the first on-line position paper on climate change and health for the Victorian Department of Human Services.
Her current areas of interest include the importance of biodiversity to human health, how heat and air pollution will affect public health under climate change, how primary health care can adapt to heat health impacts, how services to the homeless can adapt to the increasing challenges of extreme weather, how long term water insecurity affects health and well-being and the health impacts of coal, coal seam gas and wind farms.
