I am Professor of Literature and the Applied Arts at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow in English at Magdalene College. I write and teach widely across the fields of Victorian and twentieth-century literature, with particular interests in the Arts and Crafts movement, lettering (especially typography and calligraphy), histories of work and labour, museum history, and literary style. My three most recent books include The Cambridge Companion to William Morris (ed.) (Cambridge University Press, 2024), The Work of Words: Literature, Craft, and the Labour of Mind in Britain, 1830-1940 (Edinburgh University Press, 2023), and (with Lida Lopes Cardozo Kindersley), Words Made Stone: The Craft and Philosophy of Letter Cutting (Cardozo Kindersley, 2022). You can find a complete list of my publications on my University profile page.
