Jody Lynee Madeira

(she, her, hers)

Dr. Jody Madeira is the Richard S. Melvin Professor of Law at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington, IN. An expert on qualitative and mixed-methods research, Madeira's scholarly interests concern the emotional realities of harm and trust in medicine and criminal justice, and how law can better recognize and remedy them. In addition to authoring dozens of peer-reviewed and legal articles in assisted reproductive technology, bioethics, substance use, and firearm law, Madeira is the author of two solo-authored books. Taking Baby Steps: How Patients and Fertility Clinics Collaborate in Conception (U. California Press, 2018), is based on hundreds of interviews with patients and clinicians and takes readers inside the infertility experience, from dealing with infertility-related emotions to forming treatment relationships with medical professionals and confronting difficult medical decisions. Killing McVeigh: The Death Penalty and the Myth of Closure (NYU Press, 2012) explores the ways in which victims' families and survivors came to comprehend and cope with the Oklahoma City bombing through membership in community groups as well as through attendance and participation in Timothy McVeigh's prosecution and execution. She is also the author of two co-edited publications, The Edward Elgar Research Handbook of Law and Emotion (2021) and the casebook The Second Amendment: Gun Rights and Regulation (Foundation Press, 2025).
