Ivan Diaz-Rainey is a leading international expert in climate and sustainable finance, currently Professor of Finance at Griffith University (Australia) and Adjunct Professor at the University of Otago (New Zealand). Previously, he has held academic positions at the University of Otago, the University of East Anglia, the European University Institute (where he held a Jean Monnet Fellowship), and the Higher Colleges of Technology (Abu Dhabi). From 2017 to 2022, he served as a Director of the Global Research Alliance for Sustainable Finance and Investment (GRASFI). In 2024, he was a Visiting Fellow at the Edinburgh Futures Institute and an Advisor and Instructor to the European University Institute on a climate stress-testing training programme for the European Central Bank.
His research focuses on climate finance, carbon markets, energy finance, banking, financial regulation, and energy and environmental policy. A bibliometric analysis ranked him among the 20 most productive climate finance researchers worldwide (Long et al., 2023, Journal of Climate Finance). His work has been published in leading international journals, including Climatic Change, Journal of Business Ethics (FT50), Journal of Business Finance and Accounting (A*), and Energy Economics (A*). He has secured more than AUD $7.7 million in external competitive research and training funding. He was the Lead Principal Investigator on the STRAND Marsden Fund project (NZ $869,000; 2021–2024), which examined climate-change risks to property values and their implications for financial stability in collaboration with GNS Science, NIWA, CoreLogic, Bodeker Scientific, and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. He is also a Key Researcher (Co–Chief Investigator) on the STRAND 2 MBIE Smart Ideas project (NZ $1,000,000; 2025–2027), which further advances this climate stress-testing research through an interdisciplinary collaboration across New Zealand and Australia.
He has also conducted research, policy advisory, executive training, and consultancy work for organisations including the Boston Consulting Group, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, E.ON UK plc, the New Zealand Ministry for the Environment, the OECD, the European Capital Markets Institute, and the Asian Development Bank. He has commercialised his research through sustained industry engagement with EMMI, a venture-capital-backed Climate FinTech start-up. Starting in 2021, he led the transfer of machine-learning methods for corporate carbon emissions estimation into EMMI’s commercial products—based on Nguyen et al. (2021) and Nguyen et al. (2023). These models have been embedded in EMMI’s product suite and distributed globally to institutional investors via FactSet. In 2025, he also provided consultancy advice to EMMI’s new product focused on physical climate risk.
