The screen goes completely black — the camera keeps recording. New: a Face ID–locked Private Folder. Shoot 4K in Apple Log and ProRes, with full manual control.
Blackout Camera is a professional camera built for the dark.
It shoots photos and video just like the standard camera — but with one tap, the screen turns completely black while the camera keeps recording. It's made for astrophotography, meteor showers, the aurora, observatories, stage and wildlife hides, and anywhere the glow of a phone screen would ruin your shot or spoil someone else's long exposure.
SCREEN OFF
• Tap "Screen Off" and the display goes fully black and dims to its minimum — on OLED iPhones the pixels are effectively switched off — while the camera keeps shooting.
• Or have it black out automatically the instant you start recording.
• Press and hold anywhere for about a second to bring the screen back. The deliberate hold means a stray touch can't light up your screen mid-shot.
• An optional dim red "REC" dot confirms you're still recording; turn it off for total darkness.
RED NIGHT-VISION MODE
• Wash the whole interface in deep red and dim the screen so you can frame and adjust a shot without destroying your eyes' dark adaptation — the way astronomers use red light at the telescope.
MANUAL PRO CONTROLS
• Set ISO, shutter speed, focus and white balance by hand.
• One-tap infinity focus for pin-sharp stars.
• A Night preset instantly dials in high ISO, a long shutter and infinity focus.
• Tap to focus and meter, pinch to zoom.
PRO VIDEO
• Record 4K in Apple Log and Log 2, ProRes and HDR.
• Live focus peaking, zebra, false-colour and waveform scopes.
• Natural grade — the app's own high-bitrate recorder for a natural, camera-native, filmic look instead of an over-processed one.
• A sharper, full-resolution live preview.
ASTRO NIGHT STACKING (PRO)
• Point at the stars, choose an exposure (2–15 seconds), and Astro mode stacks dozens of frames into one clean, low-noise long exposure — pulling detail out of meteor showers, the aurora and the Milky Way that no single iPhone frame can hold. Best on a tripod.
• Apple ProRAW and full-resolution 48 MP stills are part of Pro too.
PHOTO & VIDEO
• Full-quality photos and video up to 4K.
• Choose where each capture is saved — your Photos library, an in-app Library, or both — with a clear confirmation each time.
• Private Folder (Pro): save straight into a Face ID / passcode‑locked folder inside the app, kept out of your Photos library.
HOME SCREEN & CONTROL CENTRE
• Start a black-screen recording in one tap from a Home Screen widget or a Control Centre button.
YOUR CONTENT STAYS YOURS
• No account required.
• Your photos and videos never leave your device — they're saved to your own Photos library and/or inside the app, and we never collect, upload or sell them.
Tip: keep the app open while shooting — locking the phone stops the camera. Blackout Camera keeps your phone from auto-locking while it's open.

Ratings & Reviews
This app has not received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Now in Simplified Chinese, Japanese and German.
• Private Folder (Pro) — save captures straight into a Face ID / passcode-locked folder, kept out of your Photos library.
• Choose where each capture is saved: Apple Photos, an in-app Library, the Private Folder, or any combination.
• Failed-payment recovery now appears on the camera screen, so a declined card no longer silently ends your subscription.
• Fixes for reliability during long shoots: a record press while the previous clip is still saving now tells you instead of doing nothing; a failed save to Photos no longer discards the recording; a single unwritable time-lapse frame no longer discards the whole run.
• Manual exposure, white balance and focus can no longer be reset mid-recording.
• Natural grade now reports its state correctly when ProRes is selected.
• Fixed: the instruction for waking the black screen said half a second, but the gesture needs a longer, deliberate hold — so following it exactly did nothing. Every screen now says the same, correct thing: press and hold anywhere for about a second.
• Settings › “Slate & Saving” is now “Saving & Privacy”, and “Save to” uses checkboxes so it is clear you can pick more than one place.
• Tokens are being retired. They can no longer be earned or bought — but any you already have keep working exactly as before until they run out, so nothing you paid for is lost. Black-screen recording and the cinema tools are part of Pro, with a free trial for eligible new subscribers.
