{"id":81076,"date":"2026-08-26T01:18:04","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T05:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/world.edu\/?p=81076"},"modified":"2026-08-26T10:54:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T14:54:00","slug":"the-information-our-favorite-chatbot-gives-us-is-neither-neutral-nor-objective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/world.edu\/the-information-our-favorite-chatbot-gives-us-is-neither-neutral-nor-objective\/","title":{"rendered":"The information our favorite chatbot gives us is neither neutral nor objective."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk\/digital-news-report\/interactive#\/?market=ALL&amp;lang=es\"><span dir=\"auto\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/chatbot-information-1.jpg\" width=\"680\" height=\"311\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk\/digital-news-report\/interactive#\/?market=ALL&amp;lang=es\"><span dir=\"auto\">Ten percent of the population<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0gets its information primarily from\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">chatbots<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014conversational agents powered by artificial intelligence (AI)\u2014according to a survey of 93,000 people worldwide for the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk\/es\/digital-news-report\/2026\"><span dir=\"auto\">Reuters Digital News Report 2026.<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0Furthermore, when participants were asked about their preferences, 46% said they seek out sources without a bias (i.e., perceived as objective). Along the same lines, a study\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-025-00791-z\"><span dir=\"auto\">published in <\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">Nature<\/span><\/em><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0indicates that AI is valued by its users as more neutral\u2014on average, 10% more\u2014than human experts in their respective fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The assumption that experts are objective\u2014the so-called\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedecisionlab.com\/es\/biases\/authority-bias\"><span dir=\"auto\">authority bias<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014is nothing new. However, with artificial intelligence, a notable difference is scale, since any content distributed through chatbot platforms has a significantly greater reach than a single human expert could achieve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Furthermore, with a few exceptions like\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apertus-ai.org\/articles\/2026-07-apertus-1-5\/\"><span dir=\"auto\">Apertus<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.48550\/arXiv.2512.13961\"><span dir=\"auto\">Olmo<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, most\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/moviles-ordenadores-coches-y-otras-cajas-negras-en-nuestras-vidas-249186\"><span dir=\"auto\">AI systems are black boxes<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0; we don&#8217;t know what decisions the algorithms have made, or why. Moreover, because they are centralized, their parent companies can introduce subtle changes to millions of users simultaneously. There are numerous misconceptions that lead us to underestimate the risks this poses, starting with the one outlined in the aforementioned\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">Nature<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0article .<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">FALSE: \u201cThe machine knows more than the person\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00146-025-02422-7\"><span dir=\"auto\">Automation bias<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0is the perception that machines and algorithms are more neutral and efficient than their human counterparts. This explains, for example, why indexing algorithms like\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/datareportal.com\/reports\/digital-2026-mid-year-global-update-report\"><span dir=\"auto\">Google have a 90% monopoly on online searches<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">This bias is also responsible for the techno-solutionist discourse that elevates AI to the position of objective arbiter of the present and future. This poses a sociocultural danger when the algorithms of certain platforms prioritize supremacist or polarizing discourses. For example, TikTok\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.37016\/mr-2020-181\"><span dir=\"auto\">promotes hateful content due to its high emotional charge, with the sole objective of keeping its users on the platform<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, while X\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-few-weeks-of-xs-algorithm-can-make-you-more-right-wing-and-it-doesnt-wear-off-quickly-276153\"><span dir=\"auto\">favors messages from its owner Elon Musk, his companies, and his political allies<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, and Deepseek\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.14722\/ndss.2026.231761\"><span dir=\"auto\">hides information contrary to the People&#8217;s Republic of China, such as that related to the Tiananmen Square protests<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">FALSE: \u201cSee? I was right\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">This automation bias is often accompanied by multiple others, among which there are three that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.15663\/ajte.v11.122\"><span dir=\"auto\">can amplify dynamics of knowledge colonization by AI<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">First,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-024-78053-7\"><span dir=\"auto\">confirmation bias<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0predisposes us to seek information that validates what we already believe, rather than questioning it. This mental shortcut was evolutionarily useful for survival: for example, if we believe we have contracted a disease, we can be quarantined and tested to find a cure and prevent further infections, instead of being labeled hypochondriacs (disconfirmation).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">In this sense,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.31234\/osf.io\/7a3d4_v1\"><span dir=\"auto\">AI-powered conversational models are designed to go along with our ideas<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0. Thus, they generate content aligned with users&#8217; beliefs\u2014\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldmigrationreport.iom.int\/msite\/wmr-2026-interactive\/#:%7E:text=The%20great%20majority%20of%20people%20do%20not%20migrate%20across%20borders%3B%20much%20larger%20numbers\"><span dir=\"auto\">for example, anti-Semitic material<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/artificial-intelligence\/articles\/10.3389\/frai.2025.1543603\/full#:%7E:text=disinformation%20post%20about%20vaccines%20generated%20by%20gpt-3.5-turbo\"><span dir=\"auto\">fabricated data and studies for disinformation<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, or all kinds of fake images\u2014just to avoid contradicting us.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">FALSE: \u201cIt\u2019s better not to question\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Secondly,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10419\/36939\"><span dir=\"auto\">the overconfidence bias<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0prevents us from constantly doubting and predisposes us to feel confident in the information we are given about certain events, even if we cannot explain them. This allows us to build knowledge gradually, making multiplication and exponentiation possible after we have learned how addition works, instead of endlessly questioning its operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">However, overconfidence also leads us to fall into the trap of hoaxes presented to us with the appearance of scientific evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">On the other hand, it directly renders invisible questions we think we already know and, therefore, simply don&#8217;t ask the AI \u200b\u200babout. However, even if we did, the truth wouldn&#8217;t be guaranteed, since chatbots are prone to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/enganos-de-la-ia-cuando-aporta-fuentes-reales-pero-inventa-su-contenido-268507\"><span dir=\"auto\">hallucinations<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">FALSE: \u201cOnly the present and the recent past exist\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Finally,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/acp.3884\"><span dir=\"auto\">recency bias <\/span><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12356758\/#Sec21:%7E:text=We%20observed%20a%20substantial%20recency%20bias%20in%20both%20the%20perceptual%20and%20value-based%20tasks.%20In%20the%20perceptual%20task%2C%2034%20of%2038%20subjects%20had%20higher%20values\"><span dir=\"auto\">predisposes us to prioritize events<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0that have recently occurred over past or future events. This bias helps us focus on our most immediate needs, such as eating or submitting a work assignment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">On the other hand, it favors recent anecdotes over long-term trends\u2014this is the trick used to deny climate change if there&#8217;s a cold snap\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/crankyuncle.com\/cranky-uncle-cartoons\/#:%7E:text=Ambiguity-,Anecdote,-Cherry%20picking\"><span dir=\"auto\">(an argument analogous to saying the sun doesn&#8217;t exist because it&#8217;s nighttime)<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/3767695.3769493\"><span dir=\"auto\">Chatbots and search engines\u2014based on AI\u2014tend to amplify this bias, primarily providing recent results<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0without considering past references beyond the most popular ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">How to respond?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">In the same way that we would ask a researcher about their methodology and participants, we can customize the memory of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chat.mistral.ai\/chat\"><span dir=\"auto\">Mistral<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lumo.proton.me\/\"><span dir=\"auto\">Lumo (from Proton)<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalconsumer.org\/sites\/default\/files\/flipbook\/Issue221\/18\/\"><span dir=\"auto\">two less environmentally damaging AI models<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 so that they diagnose their biases and those of our questions, moving from assuming they are neutral to making their limitations visible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">If we use other conversational systems, perhaps we could give them instructions to combat the three biases mentioned, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">-For confirmation bias:\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">\u201cWhen I ask you to help me with a task, include a small section (3 sentences) in your response mentioning the possible limitations and refinements of my approach.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">-For overconfidence bias:\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">\u201cTo help me find information related to searches, add a section with recommended keywords at the end of your message. Look for sources with statistics on articles that are not exclusively journalistic anecdotes and add the link to them.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">-For recency bias:\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">\u201cBe careful not to provide only recent information that does not take into account longitudinal and historical trends, and try to include little-known local perspectives instead of just popular Western articles on the topic that you will surely find if you do online searches with the most typical search engines or refer to the data you were trained on.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">No one is free from biases, but being aware of them can help us manage them better. In any case, it&#8217;s essential not to blindly trust AI output.
