It&#8217;s not that women are less capable, but rather that social expectations force them to lower their voices, limit their movements, and suppress their ambitions in order to remain perceived as &#8220;good.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The domestication of women\u2014as nurturers, keepers, and low-profile\u2014shapes how girls imagine their futures, from what is safe, what is honorable, to what is realistic to pursue. This includes\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/eap\/media\/14601\/file\/Study%20Report_Supporting%20STEM%20Career%20Transitions%20for%20Girls%20in%20ASEAN.pdf\"><span dir=\"auto\">STEM, which requires women to express their ideas, travel, and be seen in public<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">This is what&#8217;s known as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/opinion\/2026\/02\/14\/the-hidden-curriculum-of-domesticity-and-our-stem-future.html\"><span dir=\"auto\">a hidden curriculum<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0that seemingly teaches the public how to view women. It&#8217;s not about academic content, but rather social lessons about who is deemed worthy of appearing, acting, leading, and speaking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span dir=\"auto\">Women-unfriendly &#8216;gates&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">When female participation in STEM fields is low, we often refer to it as a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/09540250500145072\"><span dir=\"auto\">\u201cleaky pipeline.\u201d <\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">It<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\"> \u2019s as if talent is leaking out.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">But this metaphor isn&#8217;t quite right.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/fulltext\/2025-50489-001.html\"><span dir=\"auto\">The STEM pathway isn&#8217;t a smooth stream<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0that suddenly bursts. It&#8217;s more like a series of gates that must be passed through one by one\u2014\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kompas.id\/artikel\/kesenjangan-jender-di-bidang-stem\"><span dir=\"auto\">and often easier for men than women.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">1) Sound and visibility<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s40594-015-0020-1\"><span dir=\"auto\">STEM<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0is used to debating evidence, testing claims, and examining methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">However, in many classrooms, feedback from both teachers and students to girls is often inconsistent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">That is, teachers praise women&#8217;s academic achievements but women who dare to argue, argue, or appear confident, are often considered\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41599-020-00654-0\"><span dir=\"auto\">risky<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, \u201ctoo aggressive\u201d or \u201ctoo bold\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">If we teach girls to keep their voices down, avoid the spotlight, or be afraid to argue, we are distancing them from the core practices of scientific work: reasoning openly, testing ideas, and defending claims with evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s40594-024-00472-9\"><span dir=\"auto\">Without a safe space<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0to practice these skills, many high-achieving female students choose a socially \u201csafer\u201d path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">2) Mobility and networking<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">STEM experiences develop over time and experience. They develop through labs, fieldwork, competitions, conferences, collaborative projects, and community. These experiences open up opportunities for mentors, expand networks, and build confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">However, for women, their movement to many places and at certain hours is often restricted by security concerns, demands for propriety, or reputational concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">3) Time and burden of care<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">As\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/memutus-beban-ganda-tantangan-besar-perempuan-dalam-aktualisasi-diri-198739\"><span dir=\"auto\">women (even from adolescence) take on more household<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0and care work, time for evening study, training, project involvement, or networking becomes more limited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">They not only risk burnout, but also missing out on opportunities that often take place outside of school or work hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">4) Credibility and leadership selection<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">STEM depends on credibility: who is seen as legitimate as an \u201cexpert\u201d and worthy of leading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">When women are seen as mere support, society is less likely to ask for their expertise, more likely to doubt their abilities, and slower to appreciate them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/berbagai-faktor-kultural-hambat-perempuan-jadi-kepala-sekolah-sekadar-regulasi-yang-netral-gender-tak-cukup-jadi-solusi-185713\"><span dir=\"auto\">This credibility gap<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0is evident in classrooms, campuses, and workplaces, for example, in who is appointed to lead or whose opinions are followed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span dir=\"auto\">Change starts from school<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">If we want more women to pursue careers in STEM fields, we need\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/australia-has-hundreds-of-programs-to-get-women-into-science-but-are-they-working-time-to-find-out-133061\"><span dir=\"auto\">institutional design (structural planning, rules of the game, mechanisms, and operational procedures)<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, not just motivational phrases like \u201cwomen can do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">This means that schools must establish consistent routines that provide a safe space for girls to speak up, move, and lead\u2014without incurring any \u201csocial costs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">1) Make reasoning a classroom habit<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Establish a weekly\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2227-7102\/10\/11\/328?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span dir=\"auto\">routine<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0for students to explain strategies, compare methods, challenge ideas with evidence, and then openly revise conclusions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The focus is not on who answers quickly, but on who can explain why their answer makes sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">2) Make leadership a shared skill<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Schools can establish rotating roles, namely taking turns leading discussions, examining evidence, summarizing, and asking critical questions, so that leadership becomes a skill learned together, not a position that \u201cautomatically\u201d falls to male students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Through role reversals, all students can practice being reasoners and small decision makers in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">3) Audit of class interactions<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Schools could have teachers implement simple monitoring: who is interrupted most often, who gets follow-up questions more often, and who is praised for reasoning (rather than just compliance).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Use these notes to improve interaction patterns\u2014for example, by taking turns, allowing a few seconds before pointing at a student (\u00a0<\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Kenneth-Tobin\/publication\/244445196_The_Role_of_Wait_Time_in_Higher_Cognitive_Level_Learning\/links\/5432e2bf0cf20c6211bd980d\/The-Role-of-Wait-Time-in-Higher-Cognitive-Level-Learning.pdf\"><span dir=\"auto\">wait time<\/span><\/a><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0), and ensuring questions are distributed more evenly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The goal is to fix the class system, not blame individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">4) Bring STEM figures closer<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Invite local professionals, alumni, or students in STEM fields from around the school. When girls see real, immediate examples, they&#8217;re more likely to envision themselves in STEM fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">5) Design safe participation outside the classroom<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">STEM activities outside of school (clubs, competitions, lab visits) must be accompanied by clear logistical support and safeguards: adequate mentoring, safe accommodation, transparent parental communication, and duty\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">-of-care<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0protocols .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Don&#8217;t shift the burden of \u201crisk\u201d to family\u2014especially family who are sensitive to reputation and appropriateness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span dir=\"auto\">Continued by campus and workplace<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Campuses and workplaces can help reduce\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apec.org\/docs\/default-source\/publications\/2025\/5\/225_ppsti_women-in-science-technology-engineering-and-mathematics-(stem)-in-the-asia-pacific.pdf?sfvrsn=d877e46a_1\"><span dir=\"auto\">barriers to women&#8217;s participation in STEM<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0through several policies:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">1) Fund mobility safely and clearly<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Provide travel funding for research, internships, fieldwork, conferences, and cross-city projects\u2014along with accompanying arrangements, safe accommodation options, and clear protection procedures (parental\/guardian permission if needed, emergency contacts, reporting mechanisms).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">This is important because many STEM opportunities in Indonesia are concentrated in certain cities, despite the fact that students and workers come from various regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">2) Acknowledge that career paths are not always smooth.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Improve scholarship selection, recruitment, and promotion criteria to avoid disadvantage for those taking\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/eurheartj\/article\/45\/31\/2800\/7688902\"><span dir=\"auto\">parental leave, maternity leave, or family responsibilities<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Measure performance proportionally and based on achievements, not just length of time in one job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">3) Building a real return path<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Provide a return-to-work\/study scheme after a care break or leave. This includes refresher training, secure early project access, phased assignments, and active mentoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Ensure\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/women-in-the-workplace\"><span dir=\"auto\">the selection process is transparent and evidence-based<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, so that decisions do not depend on informal networks or perceived reputation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">It will be impossible to promote STEM competitiveness if countries continue to maintain a system that filters women out of the skills pipeline.
