Or when a health app gives you highly personalized recommendations?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Behind that intelligence lies artificial intelligence (AI) that continuously learns from our habits. The problem is, conventional methods of training AI require sending our data to central servers owned by technology companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Imagine all our messages, search history, and habits gathered in one place. It would be like forcing all students to move to one giant school: wasteful, complicated, and prone to leaks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The good news is, there&#8217;s another, safer way:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.google\/pubs\/communication-efficient-learning-of-deep-networks-from-decentralized-data\/\"><em><span dir=\"auto\">federated learning<\/span><\/em><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Teachers who come to the house<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em><span dir=\"auto\">Federated learning<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0is changing the way AI learns. While the old method required our data to &#8220;go&#8221; to a server, this new approach sends AI algorithms directly to our devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The analogy is simple. The old method was like having all patients come to one central hospital. The new method is like having a doctor visit each patient&#8217;s home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe width=\"695\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0a4cXbGvsbw\" title=\"Why do we need to cut energy use in AI data centers?\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">In\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42256-020-00302-5\"><em><span dir=\"auto\">federated learning<\/span><\/em><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, the AI \u200b\u200blearns directly on our phones or computers. Once completed, the AI \u200b\u200bonly sends a \u201clearning summary\u201d to the server, not the raw data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Our photos, messages, and habits are kept securely stored on our own devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Already used by Google<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em><span dir=\"auto\">Federated learning<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0isn&#8217;t just theory. Google has been implementing it since 2017 for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ai.googleblog.com\/2017\/04\/federated-learning-collaborative.html\"><span dir=\"auto\">its Gboard keyboard<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0on Android phones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">As we type, Gboard learns the word patterns we frequently use. This learning process occurs on our phone. It only sends general patterns to Google, not the actual content of our typing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Apple also uses a similar approach for Siri and the QuickType\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">keyboard<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0on the iPhone. They call it\u00a0<\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/privacy\/docs\/Differential_Privacy_Overview.pdf\"><span dir=\"auto\">differential privacy<\/span><\/a><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0combined with local processing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Maintaining medical confidentiality<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em><span dir=\"auto\">Federated learning<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0has enormous potential in healthcare. Medical AI research has been hampered by privacy regulations that prohibit the sharing of patient data between hospitals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">With\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">federated learning<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7490367\/\"><span dir=\"auto\">researchers can train AI<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0using data from multiple hospitals without moving medical records into one place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">A study in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41746-020-00323-1\"><span dir=\"auto\">the journal Nature<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0demonstrated that this technique successfully detected brain tumors using data from medical institutions in several countries. Patient data remained secure at each hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">This opens up opportunities for cross-border research without violating privacy regulations such as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gdpr.eu\/\"><span dir=\"auto\">the European Union&#8217;s data protection regulation (GDPR)<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Not without challenges<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em><span dir=\"auto\">Federated learning<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0isn&#8217;t a perfect solution. Because the learning process occurs on the user&#8217;s device, our phones have to work harder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/9084352\"><span dir=\"auto\">Recent research<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0shows that\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">federated learning<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0can drain battery power and requires a stable internet connection. Cheap devices with weak processors may struggle to handle this process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">There are also security challenges. Even if the original data isn&#8217;t transmitted,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/2976749.2978318\"><span dir=\"auto\">the learned patterns<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0could still leak sensitive information if not properly protected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Researchers continue to develop additional techniques, such as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/proceedings.mlr.press\/v162\/chen22c.html\"><em><span dir=\"auto\">secure aggregation<\/span><\/em><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usenix.org\/conference\/usenixsecurity22\/presentation\/stevens\"><em><span dir=\"auto\">differential privacy<\/span><\/em><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0to close this gap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span dir=\"auto\">Secure aggregation<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0is a cryptographic technique that allows a server to combine model updates from multiple clients without being able to see each client&#8217;s individual updates.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/proceedings.mlr.press\/v162\/chen22c.html\"><span dir=\"auto\">A 2022 study<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0showed that this technique can protect user privacy while maintaining communication efficiency, even when multiple users are using the AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Meanwhile,\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">differential privacy<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0provides a mathematical guarantee that\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">the model&#8217;s output<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0will not change significantly even if a single individual&#8217;s data is added or removed. This technique adds &#8221;\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">noise<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8221; to the AI \u200b\u200blearning process. It&#8217;s like mixing background noise into a meeting room: we can hear the general conclusion, but we can&#8217;t identify individual voices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usenix.org\/conference\/usenixsecurity22\/presentation\/stevens\"><span dir=\"auto\">A 2022 study<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0showed that combining\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">differential<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0privacy with\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">secure aggregation<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0can provide double protection: the server does not see individual\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">updates<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, and the data processing results are also protected from in-depth statistical analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">A promising middle ground<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Amid global concerns about privacy and data misuse by big tech companies,\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">federated learning<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0offers hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">We don&#8217;t have to choose between &#8220;using AI but losing privacy&#8221; or &#8220;preserving privacy but dumbing down technology.&#8221; There&#8217;s a middle ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Of course, there&#8217;s still a lot of work to be done.
