People\u2019s lives are more enmeshed with digital systems than ever before, increasing users\u2019 vulnerability and insecurity. From data leaks like the\u00a02017 Equifax data breach<\/a>\u00a0to the more recent cyberattack on\u00a0British retailer Marks & Spencer<\/a>, business operations and data on the internet continue to be vulnerable.<\/p>\n

There are good reasons to believe that little will be done about these risks until\u00a0a massive society-wide crisis emerges<\/a>.<\/p>\n

My research suggests that there are significant failures in our current approaches to\u00a0risk and innovation<\/a>. Digital technologies remake social life through new technologies, communication platforms and forms of artificial intelligence. All of which, while very powerful, are also highly risky in terms of malfunctioning and vulnerability to being manipulated.<\/p>\n

Yet, governments are generally unable to distinguish between what are actually valuable contributions to society and what are\u00a0intensely socially damaging<\/a>.
