The\u00a0fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk<\/a>\u00a0during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025, has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed attention to the climate of political violence in the United States. To many, Kirk was not just another partisan commentator.<\/p>\n He was one of the\u00a0most visible leaders of the young conservative movement<\/a>. Kirk helped shape Republican politics on college campuses, in media and within President Donald Trump\u2019s coalition.<\/p>\n To understand the significance of the attack \u2014 and why the reactions to it have been so strong \u2014 it helps to know who Kirk was, what the organization he built stood for, and the role he and his allies have played in national debates.<\/p>\n Charlie Kirk was a\u00a0conservative activist, author and media personality<\/a>\u00a0who rose to prominence unusually early.<\/p>\n Raised in the Chicago suburbs, he made national headlines at 18 for founding\u00a0Turning Point USA<\/a>, a conservative youth movement. Kirk\u00a0only briefly attended college<\/a>. Instead, he chose to devote himself full time to conservative organizing.<\/p>\n That decision became central to the mythos surrounding him: He represented a choice among promising young conservatives to\u00a0skip higher education in protest<\/a>\u00a0of the alleged left-leaning bias of universities.<\/p>\n Over the next decade, Kirk grew into a national figure. Beginning in 2016, he\u00a0frequently spoke at Trump rallies<\/a>, which helped him to build an extensive media profile.<\/p>\n In 2020 he published the \u201cThe MAGA Doctrine<\/a>,\u201d a bestselling book that argued in favor of nationalism and Trump\u2019s \u201cAmerica First Agenda.\u201d And his eponymous podcast \u2013 \u201cThe Charlie Kirk Show<\/a>\u201d \u2013 was\u00a0downloaded more than 120 million times<\/a>\u00a0over the past 10 months, according to Turning Point.<\/p>\n Kirk\u2019s program featured political commentary and interviews with prominent Republican personalities and politicians \u2013 guests included Tucker Carlson, Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. These conversations amplified Kirk\u2019s reach well beyond student audiences.<\/p>\n Turning Point USA was founded in 2012\u00a0by Kirk and Bill Montgomery<\/a>. Kirk met Montgomery, a retired businessman, after Kirk gave a speech at a conservative youth summit in Illinois. Montgomery urged him not to pursue college but to instead dedicate himself fully to building a youth conservative movement.<\/p>\n Kirk described\u00a0the early days as lonely<\/a>: driving to campuses, handing out flyers and trying to recruit students to talk about free markets and limited government.<\/p>\n Turning Point drew significant financial backing from\u00a0high-profile conservative donors<\/a>, including Foster Friess, the Wyoming financier; the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation; and Illinois businessman Richard Uihlein and his family foundation.<\/p>\n By 2024, Turning Point claimed chapters at more than 1,000 campuses, employed more than 400 staffers and had grown\u00a0its annual budget to over US$8 million<\/a><\/p>\n Today, Turning Point is best known for hosting large-scale conferences. Its\u00a0Student Action Summit<\/a>\u00a0in Florida regularly draws between 4,000 and 5,000 students and has featured appearances by GOP heavyweights including\u00a0Donald Trump Jr.<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Texas Sen. Ted Cruz<\/a>. A 2022 gathering in Phoenix, called AmericaFest,\u00a0attracted more than 10,000 attendees<\/a>.<\/p>\n Most controversially, the group\u2019s\u00a0Professor Watchlist<\/a>\u00a0webpage publishes the names of academics it accuses of bias against conservatives.<\/p>\n Turning Point has also spun off like-minded subsidiaries, including\u00a0Turning Point Action<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0TPUSA Faith<\/a>. These organizations expand Turning Point\u2019s reach into electoral politics and church organizing.\u00a0TPUSA\u2019s media division<\/a>\u00a0produces a steady stream of popular videos, livestreams and podcasts, a legacy that should ensure Kirk\u2019s influence lasts despite his death.<\/p>\n Kirk and Turning Point provided\u00a0important connections<\/a>\u00a0for younger conservatives and the Republican Party. In 2016, Turning Point mobilized thousands of students for Trump\u2019s campaign, and Kirk was invited to speak at the Republican National Convention.<\/p>\n By 2020, the organization was playing a more overt political role. Turning Point Action ran\u00a0voter-registration drives<\/a>\u00a0in battleground states, and the group sponsored buses and advertising to\u00a0bring supporters to Washington, D.C.<\/a>, ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, \u201cStop the Steal\u201d rally. Kirk tweeted at the time that Turning Point would be sending \u201c80+ buses full of patriots\u201d to the event.<\/p>\n While he later deleted the message and distanced himself from the violence, it underscored the group\u2019s entanglement in the most contested moments of the Trump era.
