Even physical education is changing thanks to new tools that blend the physical with the digital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">According to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2078-2489\/15\/9\/582\"><span dir=\"auto\">our recent research<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality can help students feel more motivated. They can also improve the way they communicate and learn. They can also engage all students, regardless of their needs, making the classroom more inclusive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Virtual, augmented and mixed reality in physical education<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Before explaining how to apply these technologies, let&#8217;s define what we mean by each of them:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">Virtual reality creates a fully digital and immersive world where the person can move and interact with what they see.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">Augmented reality adds digital images or sounds to the real world. It doesn&#8217;t change the surroundings; it just enhances them. This way, people see more details and feel more interest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">Mixed reality combines the best of both: it blends digital objects with the real environment. Everything happens simultaneously and interactively.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Their use in Physical Education doesn&#8217;t mean replacing exercise with technology, but rather the opposite. These\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iti.es\/blog\/realidad-mixta-futuro-rehabilitacion-ejercicio-fisico\/#:%7E:text=A%20trav%C3%A9s%20de%20dispositivos%20que%20capturan%20y,de%20manera%20fluida%20con%20el%20mundo%20f%C3%ADsico.&amp;text=Los%20juegos%20en%20RM%20ofrecen%20una%20forma,hacer%20ejercicio%20m%C3%A1s%20accesible%20y%20menos%20intimidante.\"><span dir=\"auto\">technologies<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0serve to make\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v0yJqXEi8AM\"><span dir=\"auto\">physical activity more fun and varied, helping us move more<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">How to use them?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">There are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eieh.es\/icaros-fitness-realidad-virtual\/#:%7E:text=En%20el%20mundo%20del%20fitness,f%C3%ADsica%20y%20motivaci%C3%B3n%20del%20usuario.\"><span dir=\"auto\">programs<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0that allow you to run, do yoga, or correct posture. They also help measure your performance. It&#8217;s even possible to turn exercise into a game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">All of this is done while we move, with the help and guidance of a virtual assistant. The experience is active, realistic, and very engaging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">For example,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fitxr.com\/\"><span dir=\"auto\">FitXR<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0offers the ability to work out without leaving home using\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G_TmUGzB_jA\"><span dir=\"auto\">virtual reality<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0headsets . This app is an ideal option for those who don&#8217;t have time to go to the gym or don&#8217;t feel comfortable in that environment. Meanwhile, Jumpr, FunFit, and Starri\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uD75rrv-NHA\"><span dir=\"auto\">use augmented reality<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0to perform physical exercise using a mobile phone. Another app that uses mixed reality is\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scontent-mad2-1.oculuscdn.com\/v\/t64.7195-25\/75297580_267412382209634_2176354665885601822_n.mp4?_nc_cat=110&amp;ccb=1-7&amp;_nc_sid=b20b63&amp;_nc_ohc=rXBhAlE_UJQQ7kNvwENteMK&amp;_nc_oc=Adm2eKfRgvIT5lxaaoPcYkARzrkxvIO_xUi6C_f90snlWYQGWAp1vBtHQMm901DRxos&amp;_nc_zt=28&amp;_nc_ht=scontent-mad2-1.oculuscdn.com&amp;_nc_gid=fAvGPKzcsl7cMzjqOCW_EA&amp;oh=00_AfPBibx4mpi3FmG5vD9Rr7l_jwJtuKCrXFb3FHBXyhU_jA&amp;oe=686093C5\"><span dir=\"auto\">Holofit<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, which allows you to run or exercise in virtual environments superimposed on real space.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span dir=\"auto\">The benefits for Physical Education<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">Improving movement skills.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recyt.fecyt.es\/index.php\/retos\/article\/view\/109935\/80175\"><span dir=\"auto\">Several studies<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0show that using these tools helps improve movement. For example, with augmented reality, students can see in real time whether they are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recyt.fecyt.es\/index.php\/retos\/article\/view\/111727\/81661\"><span dir=\"auto\">positioning their bodies correctly<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0and can correct mistakes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">Creating safe places for practicing difficult or dangerous sports, such as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simuladoresvirtuales.com\/realidad-virtual\/simuladores-de-esqui-vr\/\"><span dir=\"auto\">skiing<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0or climbing, thanks to virtual reality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">Increased motivation and desire to participate. Technology can make exercise more fun, as it introduces playful and interactive elements. In this sense, some\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3339488\/\"><span dir=\"auto\">video games<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0that require movement have also been found to increase interest and commitment to sports.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">Help for students with special needs. These technologies allow all students to participate, even those with disabilities. Activities can be tailored to be safe and effective for each individual. Several\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s11062-023-09937-z\"><span dir=\"auto\">studies<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0show that using virtual and augmented reality\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s10639-022-11550-2\"><span dir=\"auto\">improves motivation<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, memory, and body control in students with disabilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">More personalized class design, adapting the activity to each student, according to their pace and level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">Cognitive benefits. This type of activity improves\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2071-1050\/15\/6\/5062\"><span dir=\"auto\">attention<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1145\/3596454.3597183\"><span dir=\"auto\">memory<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0, promotes interaction, and stimulates creativity. It also creates a good context for using active methodologies in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionkoinonia.com.ve\/ojs\/index.php\/revistakoinonia\/article\/view\/1941\"><span dir=\"auto\">physical education classes<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><span dir=\"auto\">Challenges and issues to consider<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Using this technology in physical education classes, or for exercising at home, shouldn&#8217;t simply involve putting on virtual reality headsets and starting to exercise, or giving them to students. It&#8217;s essential to have specific technologies, something not everyone can afford, and to have sufficient understanding of the\u00a0<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">software<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0.
