But I\u2019ve made a big list this time, just for a change. Fifty things to do to help yourself with your writing. Build your writing strategy repertoire!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tackle perfectionism<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write badly on purpose \u2013 Give yourself permission to write terribly to free yourself from your inner critic<\/li>\n<li>Embrace \u201cshitty first drafts\u201d knowing you\u2019ll revise later<\/li>\n<li>Set smaller, manageable goals \u2013 Commit to just one paragraph, page, or sentence instead of whole chapters<\/li>\n<li>Use constraints or limitations \u2013 Set artificial boundaries e.g. 100-word arguments or avoiding certain words<\/li>\n<li>Free writing \u2013 Write continuously for 10-15 minutes without editing or censoring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Change your physical environment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Change your environment \u2013 Move to different locations, coffee shops, libraries, or outdoor spaces<\/li>\n<li>Write in public spaces where other writers go \u2013 look for cafes and libraries with ambient writing energy<\/li>\n<li>Exercise before writing \u2013 Take walks, swim or stretch to stimulate thinking<\/li>\n<li>Write during different times of day \u2013 Experiment with writing times to find your peak creativity<\/li>\n<li>Use writing retreats \u2013 Find face to face or virtual workshops that remove daily distractions<\/li>\n<li>Turn your email and phone off<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use alt approaches<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try a different medium \u2013 Switch from typing to handwriting, voice recording, mind maps, or visual storyboards<\/li>\n<li>Use voice-to-text software \u2013 Speak your story aloud and let the tech transcribe it<\/li>\n<li>Write in a different genre \u2013 Try poetry, play or news reports when stuck<\/li>\n<li>Use writing games \u2013 Turn your writing into a game with points and achievements e.g. Writeopoly!!<\/li>\n<li>Play with automatic writing \u2013 Try to empty your mind and let your hand write without conscious direction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Play with structure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start with the middle or end \u2013 Skip the bits where you are stuck, like beginnings, and write sections you\u2019re excited about<\/li>\n<li>Work backwards from your conclusion \u2013 Trace logical steps backward from your So What end point<\/li>\n<li>Use the \u201csnowflake method\u201d \u2013 Start with one sentence, expand it to a paragraph, then a page<\/li>\n<li>Study story structures \u2013 Try frameworks like Hero\u2019s Journey or a three-act structure<\/li>\n<li>Review and organise existing material \u2013 Reread work, make notes, create sketches, outline next steps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shift perspective<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write from different POV (point of view) \u2013 Switch to first\/third person<\/li>\n<li>Write letters about your research to yourself or others. Be your research and write a letter to the writer<\/li>\n<li>Write companion pieces \u2013 Create prequels, or alternative versions of the same data analysis<\/li>\n<li>Interview yourself about your paper\/chapter\/book<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get inspired<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Read something interesting \u2013 Immerse yourself in good writing to spark ideas. Take a random book from a shelf and read.<\/li>\n<li>Research new sources \u2013 Dive into some of those PDFs you\u2019ve been hoarding, visit a museum, listen to a podcast<\/li>\n<li>Go multimedia \u2013 Listen to mood music, create a mood board for your writing, watch atmospheric films<\/li>\n<li>Write as if you were \u2013 Transcribe passages of good writing and analyse the style<\/li>\n<li>Try ekphrastic writing \u2013 Write detailed descriptions of paintings, photographs, or sculptures<\/li>\n<li>Keep an idea journal \u2013 Capture random thoughts, overheard conversations, or interesting observations. revisit often<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use prompts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Develop writing prompts or exercises \u2013 Try asking questions you would ask another writer, or write about what you need to write<\/li>\n<li>Use randomisers \u2013 Roll dice for sections or topics to write about, use random word generators, ask yourself serially \u201cwhat if\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Write reviews or critiques \u2013 Analyse book or articles in your field<\/li>\n<li>Use sensory writing exercises \u2013 Focus on one sense at a time and use this to generate new text<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Build routines<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regularly use Pomodoros \u2013 Work in focused 25-minute sprints followed by 5-minute breaks., Schedule these<\/li>\n<li>Write morning pages \u2013 Do three pages of stream-of-consciousness thoughts first thing each morning<\/li>\n<li>Create a writing ritual \u2013 Develop consistent pre-writing routines that signal creative time<\/li>\n<li>Use the \u201cdoor method\u201d \u2013 Stop mid-sentence when ending sessions for easy re-entry points<\/li>\n<li>Study your own writing patterns \u2013 Track when, where, and under what conditions you write best.
