The\u00a0alarming national rise in suicidal thoughts<\/a>\u00a0and behaviors among teenage girls\u00a0has made headlines recently<\/a>. Experts point to social media, cyberbullying and\u00a0COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0as potential new sources of stress for teenagers.<\/p>\n

However, a\u00a0well-known source of stress<\/a>\u00a0that now affects more teenagers compared with a decade ago has been overlooked in explanations for this increase \u2013 stress related to sexual identity.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0scholars focused<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0education policy<\/a>, we conducted\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0showing that the increase in suicidal thoughts and behaviors corresponds with a dramatic rise in the number of female high school students who identify as LGBQ \u2013 lesbian, gay, bisexual or questioning.<\/p>\n

A double bind for LGBQ teens<\/strong><\/h4>\n

While some LGBQ youth are growing up in supportive environments,\u00a0our findings<\/a>\u00a0suggest that an increasing number may be experiencing a\u00a0double bind<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a communication dilemma in which a person receives two or more mutually conflicting messages.<\/p>\n

Many LGBQ youth may believe it\u2019s safe to \u201ccome out\u201d due to greater access to information and the increased\u00a0visibility of LGBQ people in U.S. society<\/a>. But\u00a0coming out earlier in life<\/a>\u00a0could expose them to discrimination and social stress in their schools, families and communities.<\/p>\n

This stress related to sexual orientation can contribute to a\u00a0greater prevalence of mental health concerns<\/a>, including suicide.<\/p>\n

We analyzed national data from over 44,000 U.S. high school students who took the\u00a0Youth Risk Behavior Survey<\/a>\u00a0in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021. We did this to understand these parallel national trends of\u00a0rising suicide risk and rising LGBQ identification among teens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Between 2015 and 2021, the percentage of\u00a0high school girls identifying as LGBQ<\/a>\u00a0jumped from 15% to 34%. During this same period, all females who reported they thought about suicide\u00a0increased from 23% to 29%<\/a>. Creating a plan to commit suicide rose from 19% to 23%.<\/p>\n

But looking at the data more closely reveals something crucial: Girls who identified as LGBQ consistently reported much higher rates of thinking about, planning and attempting suicide.<\/p>\n

In 2021, about\u00a048% of LGBQ females considered suicide<\/a>, compared with roughly 20% of heterosexual females. When we accounted for this difference statistically, we found the overall rise in female suicidal thoughts and behaviors were explained by more students identifying as LGBQ.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0the percentage of male students identifying as LGBQ increased only slightly, from 6% in 2015 to 9% in 2021<\/a>, with similar smaller changes in suicidal thoughts and behaviors.<\/p>\n

Why more students may be identifying as LGBQ<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The increase in LGBQ identification among more female students in the past decade likely indicates\u00a0greater access to information<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0social acceptance<\/a>. It may also reflect the\u00a0greater visibility of LGBQ people<\/a>, including in popular media and leadership roles, which may help young people\u00a0better understand and label their own identity<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s teenagers, regardless of sexual orientation, have more language and representation to help them make sense of their experiences than previous generations did. Some teens have\u00a0supportive parents<\/a>\u00a0and attend\u00a0schools that are supportive<\/a>\u00a0of their sexual orientation.<\/p>\n

However, identifying as LGBQ may still come with significant challenges for many youth.<\/p>\n

Research has consistently shown that LGBQ youth face\u00a0unique stressors<\/a>. They include\u00a0discrimination<\/a>,\u00a0rejection by family members and friends<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0bullying and harassment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Studies incorporating\u00a0several generations of LGBQ people over the past 50 years<\/a>\u00a0find that, despite more societal acceptance, LGBTQ+ people born in the 1990s reported stressors at least as high as older generations born in the 1950s-80s. And younger generations reported the highest rate of suicide attempts.<\/p>\n

Our findings highlight a critical point. The rising rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors among all teenage girls cannot be understood in isolation from their social context and identities. While more young people feel able to openly identify as LGBQ, many still face substantial challenges that can affect their mental health.<\/p>\n

We believe this understanding has important implications for how we address the crisis. Simply implementing general suicide prevention programs may not be enough. Experts may need to craft targeted support that addresses the specific challenges and pressures faced by LGBQ youth.<\/p>\n

The need for supportive school environments<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Schools play a crucial role in supporting student well-being.<\/p>\n

However, states such as\u00a0Indiana<\/a>,\u00a0Florida<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Iowa<\/a>\u00a0have recently\u00a0restricted resources and support for LGBQ and trans students<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since 2021, legislators in at least\u00a024 states have attempted to pass similar laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other states, such as\u00a0Montana<\/a>,\u00a0Tennessee<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Arizona<\/a>, don\u2019t outright ban this curriculum. But they severely restrict how educators can discuss sexual orientation and gender identity by adding additional burdens on educators, including parental notification requirements.<\/p>\n

The Trump Administration, meanwhile, has\u00a0started to roll back earlier federal efforts to protect LGBQ and trans students<\/a>\u00a0and recently\u00a0deleted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Our research suggests this approach could be dangerous.<\/p>\n

If we want to address rising suicidal thoughts and behaviors among teenage girls, we need to understand and support LGBQ youth better.<\/p>\n

Rather than reducing support, schools, parents and youth advocates could maintain and expand their resources to support LGBQ youth. This includes efforts to create safe and affirming\u00a0school environments<\/a>, and\u00a0training staff<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0teachers<\/a>\u00a0to support LGBQ students effectively.<\/p>\n
