Since the 1990s,\u00a0fast fashion<\/a>\u00a0has enabled everyday people to buy the latest catwalk trends. But the sheer volume of garments being whipped up, sold and soon discarded is\u00a0contributing to a global sustainability crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n Now, just when the fashion industry should be waking up and breaking free of this vicious cycle, it\u2019s heading in the opposite direction. We\u2019re on a downward spiral, from\u00a0fast fashion<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0ultra-fast fashion<\/a>. The amount of\u00a0natural resources consumed and waste produced<\/a>\u00a0is snowballing.<\/p>\n Ultra-fast fashion is marked by even faster production cycles, blink-and-you\u2019ll-miss-it trends, and\u00a0poor labour practices<\/a>. Brands like Shein, Boohoo and Cider are liberated from the concept of seasonal collections. Instead they are\u00a0producing garments at breakneck speeds<\/a>\u00a0and self-generating\u00a0microtrends<\/a>\u00a0such as balletcore, Barbiecore and even mermaidcore. At the same time there is\u00a0limited transparency or accountability<\/a>\u00a0around clothing supply chains.<\/p>\n The\u00a0overproduction and consumption of clothing<\/a>\u00a0cannot be allowed to continue. Without change, the industry will account for\u00a026% of the world\u2019s carbon budget<\/a>\u00a0for limiting global warming to 2\u00b0C by 2050. The fashion industry must take responsibility for its actions. Policymakers also have an important role to play in enabling the necessary shift towards a\u00a0more responsible and circular fashion economy<\/a>. And let\u2019s not forget the power of consumers.
