Prime Minister Rishi Sunak\u00a0has announced<\/a>\u00a0plans to scrap A-levels and the recently introduced\u00a0T-levels<\/a>. He unveiled proposals for young people to instead study the new Advanced British Standard (ABS) at the Conservative party conference in Manchester.<\/p>\n The proposed changes represent a major shake-up of post-16 education in England. Sunak intends to replace existing post-GCSE qualifications, such as A-levels and T-levels, with a single qualification. Under the ABS, most learners aged 16-19 would study five different subjects, including some form of English and maths.<\/p>\n Most students would study three subjects in depth as a \u201cmajor\u201d, and two further subjects as a \u201cminor\u201d. The\u00a0government says<\/a>\u00a0this will give students the \u201cwider knowledge base\u201d valued by employers.<\/p>\n The new qualification is likely to take\u00a0at least a decade<\/a>\u00a0to design and implement.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Advanced British Standard<\/a>\u00a0aims to combine the \u201cthe best parts of both A-levels and T-levels\u201d \u2013 the academic rigour of the former and the occupational standards provided by the latter.
