Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science.\u00a0It combines algorithms and data that allow machines to learn and perform complex tasks.\u00a0It imitates, to a certain extent, the functioning of human intelligence.<\/p>\n

After\u00a0successive waves<\/a>\u00a0of development and expansion, AI is now experiencing a new spring.\u00a0It will continue to develop and impact our lives.<\/p>\n

In education, its main areas are:\u00a0neural networks<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0deep learning<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0reinforcement learning<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0machine learning<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0TheGenerative AI<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0LLM<\/em>\u00a0(\u00a0Large Language Models<\/em>\u00a0), virtual machines based on natural language with the capacity to generate content (text, images, videos), such as chatbots\u00a0,<\/a><\/em>\u00a0are driving the debate about their use.<\/p>\n

Pedagogical and ethical implications<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The debate is focused on digital literacy and its pedagogical and ethical implications: the creation of respectful environments, the stimulation of flexible learning, the existence of accessible resources and the promotion of positive\u00a0attitudes<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0The focus is on how AI can contribute to successful education for all.\u00a0To guide this process, there is a global proposal called\u00a0the Beijing Consensus<\/a>\u00a0(UNESCO, 2019).<\/p>\n

Regarding this, there are five essential aspects:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Political<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0: Is AI a political priority?\u00a0Does it favor a better education?<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Social<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0: Does it contribute to the social function of education?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Pedagogical<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0: Does it offer opportunities to\u00a0<\/span>improve education<\/span><\/a>\u00a0?\u00a0What limits does it have?\u00a0How can it be integrated with a formative sense?\u00a0Can it promote personalization of learning?\u00a0Does it improve teaching competence?<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Ethical<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0: Does it contribute to the common good?\u00a0Is it safe?\u00a0What\u00a0<\/span>ethical challenges does its integration in education pose<\/span><\/a>\u00a0?\u00a0Can responsible and ethical use be ensured?\u00a0Is it possible to build ethical AI?<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Emotional<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0: How does it affect emotional education?\u00a0Does it have emotional effects on the student body?\u00a0Can we talk about an emotional AI?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Ten challenges<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    The ten challenges within the current educational debate for educational artificial intelligence (IAE) are the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Serve as educational support, and improve teaching and learning both in administrative aspects and in educational tasks.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Contribute to reflective teaching and pedagogical coherence.\u00a0By transforming the teaching role and automating some tasks, you will leave more time for personalized treatment.\u00a0Reflection on practice will be enhanced.\u00a0Greater use can be made of proposals such as collaborative international online learning (\u00a0<\/span>COIL<\/span><\/a>\u00a0) or\u00a0<\/span>challenge-based learning<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Achieve critical and creative learning.\u00a0Identify lies and hoaxes;\u00a0analyze information and its sources;\u00a0and considering different perspectives to form informed opinions will be the skills to be developed.\u00a0This will encourage imagination and originality for creative thinking.<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Integration and gender perspective.\u00a0It could be used to combat discrimination and gender bias through the analysis of images or texts.\u00a0However, there is a prior task pending: reduce the digital divide and avoid gender bias in AI applications.<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. For and with everyone \u2013educational equity\u2013.\u00a0AI can offer opportunities and tailored responses to all students, enhance universal accessibility, the removal of barriers and participation in learning.<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. The promotion of transversal skills \u2013 oral communicative, investigative, reflective, emotional and ethical \u2013 becomes even more essential to contribute to the formation of a citizenry committed to current environmental, social and economic challenges.\u00a0And to promote decision making.<\/span><\/li>\n
    7. Permanent training of teachers.\u00a0The redefinition of access, use and security within the framework of digital skills.\u00a0Training should promote conscious use and improvement, aligned with the learning outcomes.<\/span><\/li>\n
    8. Communication, training and participation of families.\u00a0Promote new forms of collaboration and participation of families in education.<\/span><\/li>\n
    9. The promotion of ethical learning;\u00a0avoid dishonest behavior such as plagiarism or false attribution of authorship, and use with intention to harm.<\/span><\/li>\n
    10. Formative and shared evaluation.\u00a0The evaluation can be guided with a lot of data, in a valid and reliable way.\u00a0In this way, it makes students more aware of what and how they learn.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Flexibility and openness<\/strong><\/h4>\n

      Reflecting on the challenges posed by the use of IAE is key and has repercussions in three areas:<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. The creation of meaningful learning environments and situations that transcend the limits of the classroom, valuing the students’ previous knowledge and providing support to explore new knowledge.<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. The connection with educational and professional guidance that promotes learning throughout life.<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. The promotion of its formative use with a critical and ethical sense: the IAE is an aid to review how we are doing it, contributing to change what we do not like.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        The IAE can be an opportunity to advance necessary pedagogical changes and improvements, in the sense that education offers\u00a0<\/span>relevant and meaningful learning for students<\/span><\/a>\u00a0throughout life for the 21st century.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Risks and caution<\/strong><\/h4>\n

        Many voices<\/span><\/a>\u00a0warn of the risks of AI in the fields of privacy and security.\u00a0It is a technology that makes us vulnerable to deception and manipulation, even emotional.\u00a0Especially in the case of the student body, who might not have enough control over the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

        In a framework of profound digital transformation, we must keep in mind the “Know thyself” of the Temple of Apollo in Delphi.\u00a0Nothing new under the sun, some people say.\u00a0The truth is that these challenges show an extraordinary transformation in the teaching process, but above all in the learning process.\u00a0It is time to be prudent and aware of the importance of building an IAE.<\/span><\/p>\n
