There is a\u00a0scene<\/a>\u00a0in the film Incredibles 2 where young Dash asks his dad Bob for help with his maths homework. Bob obliges and begins to scribble on a notepad. But Dash quickly points to his textbook and says, \u201cthat\u2019s not the way you\u2019re supposed to do it, Dad\u201d.<\/p>\n Frustrated, Bob exclaims Many parents trying to help their children with maths may be asking the same sort of question.<\/p>\n Pythagoras\u2019 Theorem<\/a>\u00a0is as accurate today as it was when it was discovered millennia ago, and it will continue to remain so. But teachers today also teach maths very differently from when parents were at school.<\/p>\n The teaching and learning of maths has undergone a transformation in past 30 years.<\/p>\n In the past there has been a focus on teaching students\u00a0procedures<\/a>, such as times tables and how to work out the circumference of a circle or solve an equation.<\/p>\n We now appreciate the importance of forming mental\u00a0connections between concepts<\/a>. For example, when students understand the connection between similar triangles and trigonometry they understand the definition of\u00a0trigonometric ratios<\/a>\u00a0at a much deeper level.<\/p>\n This is because we know\u00a0today\u2019s learners<\/a>\u00a0need to be able to transfer their mathematical understanding to complex, unfamiliar situations.<\/p>\n This means they need to be able to do more than apply a formula and get an answer right. They need to be able to\u00a0solve problems<\/a>\u00a0as they arise.
\nI don\u2019t know that way! Why would they change math? Math is math!<\/em><\/p>\nMental connections not procedures<\/strong><\/h4>\n
