The world of writing is changing.\u00a0First, there were keyboards, automatic entry of words or sentences on messaging.\u00a0An era of which we are already turning the page.\u00a0With the rise of artificial intelligence, robots can now\u00a0<\/span>produce texts<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of a level comparable to texts written by humans, without the use of any hand whatsoever.<\/span><\/p>\n

With recent improvements in transcription software, even human writers can do without a keyboard, let alone a pen.\u00a0And AI would even open up the possibility of\u00a0<\/span>generating texts<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by reading brain activity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The writers of the future will be talkers and thinkers who don’t need to lift a finger.\u00a0The word \u201cwriter\u201d could evolve to a very different meaning, with people composing texts in myriad ways in an increasingly digital world.\u00a0So, do human beings still need to\u00a0<\/span>learn to write by hand<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0?<\/span><\/p>\n

With the pandemic, online education has grown considerably, and in different countries around the world,\u00a0<\/span>some important tests<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are now carried out on computers.\u00a0Voices are also raised in favor of\u00a0<\/span>the abandonment of cursive writing<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in high school.\u00a0However, handwriting remains central to fundamental learning in elementary school.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parents may wonder if it’s still worth spending time on the\u00a0<\/span>difficult learning of handwriting<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0Wouldn’t the efforts made be better invested in an introduction to coding?\u00a0After all, students with disabilities are already learning to write with\u00a0<\/span>assistive technology<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n

But there are a number of important reasons why handwriting will always \u2013 and always should \u2013 be taught in schools.\u00a0Here are five.<\/span><\/p>\n

Writing develops fine motor skills<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Handwriting develops the motor skills and coordination necessary to control precise movements, which are\u00a0<\/span>essential in everyday life<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, whether at school or later in the professional sphere.<\/span><\/p>\n

The improvement of these motor skills results in increasingly readable and fluent writing.\u00a0We don’t know where technology will take us, but it may take us back to the past.<\/span><\/p>\n

Handwriting could be more important than ever if\u00a0<\/span>tests and exams return to handwriting<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to prevent the use of\u00a0<\/span>generative AI<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and cheating.<\/span><\/p>\n

Writing by hand makes memorization easier<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Handwriting has significant cognitive benefits,\u00a0<\/span>especially for memory<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0Research suggests that notes taken with a pen are\u00a0<\/span>better remembered<\/span><\/a>\u00a0than those taken on a computer, due to the greater complexity of the handwriting process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning to read and write are\u00a0<\/span>intimately linked<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0Students become better readers by practicing writing.<\/span><\/p>\n

A tool for graphic design<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Handwriting and related activities such as drawing can be sources of creativity and\u00a0<\/span>well-being<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at any age.<\/span><\/p>\n

The popularity of practices such as journaling\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span><\/a>\u00a0calligraphy are proof of this.\u00a0There are many online communities where writers share great examples of graphic design.<\/span><\/p>\n

Great flexibility of use<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Handwriting requires no electricity or devices, batteries, software, subscriptions, internet connection, loading times \u2013 and all those other things that digital writing depends on.<\/span><\/p>\n

It only assumes a pen and paper.\u00a0And it can be done anywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, for writing a birthday card, filling out printed forms, or writing a quick note, it’s the easiest and best solution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Writing as a medium for reflection<\/strong><\/h4>\n

More importantly, learning to write and to think are intimately linked.\u00a0Ideas are formed\u00a0<\/span>as students write<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0They are developed and organized throughout the composition. This is something that cannot be delegated to robots!<\/span><\/p>\n

Teaching writing involves giving students a toolkit of multiple writing strategies to enable them to realize their potential as thoughtful, creative, and skilled communicators.\u00a0And handwriting will remain an important part of that toolkit for the foreseeable future, despite the amazing advances in generative AI.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perfection of spelling may become less important in the future.\u00a0But students will still need to be able to handwrite legibly and fluently as part of their studies and daily lives.<\/span><\/p>\n
