{"id":68588,"date":"2023-06-14T03:16:46","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T07:16:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/world.edu\/?p=68588"},"modified":"2023-06-14T03:16:46","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T07:16:46","slug":"are-we-using-the-terms-authenticate-and-authenticate-correctly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/world.edu\/are-we-using-the-terms-authenticate-and-authenticate-correctly\/","title":{"rendered":"Are we using the terms &#8216;authenticate&#8217; and &#8216;authenticate&#8217; correctly?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68589\" src=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Authenticate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Authenticate.jpg 680w, https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Authenticate-250x167.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When carrying out administrative procedures, the user is often asked\u00a0<em>to authenticate<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>authenticate<\/em>\u00a0what is requested, indistinctly.\u00a0By using both words, one can consider the influence of the English\u00a0<em>authenticate<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>authenticate<\/em>\u00a0in the use of these verbs.<\/p>\n<p>However, today the two words are included in the\u00a0<em>Dictionary of the Spanish language<\/em>\u00a0of the Royal Academy, the basis of the standard in terms of lexicon.\u00a0In this\u00a0<em>Dictionary<\/em>\u00a0they are included without any mark indicating restrictions on their use.\u00a0In addition to this, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rae.es\/dpd\/autenticar\"><em>Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts<\/em><\/a>\u00a0clarifies:<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Authenticate.\u00a0&#8216;Certify authenticity&#8217; (\u2026) This verb is already documented in medieval Spanish and is still fully valid in legal and administrative language, especially in America.\u00a0With this same sense, the verb authenticate has been created in modern times, which is also considered valid and is the one used with preference in the Spanish of Spain and a good part of America.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As a consultation tool for doubts in the language, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundeu.es\/recomendacion\/autenticar-autentificar\/\">Fund\u00e9u<\/a>\u00a0insists on the explanation of the\u00a0<em>Pan-Hispanic Dictionary<\/em>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the use in current Spanish of the two words with the meaning of &#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dle.rae.es\/autentificar?m=form\">certify the authenticity<\/a>\u00a0&#8221; is correct.<\/p>\n<p>However it was not always so.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Where does each one come from?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To reflect the use and tradition of the two words in Spanish, two corpora provided by the Royal Academy were used: the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rae.es\/banco-de-datos\/cdh\"><em>Historical Dictionary of the Spanish Language<\/em><\/a>\u00a0, which includes the lexicon from the origins of the language to 2005, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rae.es\/banco-de-datos\/corpes-xxi\"><em>Corpus del Espa\u00f1ol del 21st century<\/em> (CORPES XXI)<\/a>\u00a0, as regards the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the previous ones, historically,\u00a0<em>authenticating<\/em>\u00a0has a greater tradition in the language, since it is documented in texts from the year 1247. For its part, the first example of\u00a0<em>authenticating<\/em>\u00a0is from 1893, more than 600 years later.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, it was in the Middle Ages and the 18th century that\u00a0<em>authenticating<\/em>\u00a0became more widely used.\u00a0With respect to\u00a0<em>authenticate<\/em>\u00a0, the highest frequency occurs in the 20th century, but it is less frequent in this century than that of\u00a0<em>authenticate<\/em>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>In the 21st century there continue to be more examples of\u00a0<em>authenticate<\/em>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Presence in academic dictionaries<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Royal Spanish Academy provides as a resource the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rae.es\/obras-academicas\/diccionarios\/nuevo-tesoro-lexicografico-0\"><em>New Lexicographical Treasure of the Spanish Language<\/em><\/a>\u00a0, in which nearly 70 dictionaries are compiled, including all the academic ones.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, it is verified that\u00a0<em>authenticate<\/em>\u00a0is already registered in the first dictionary of the Academy, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps2.rae.es\/DA.html\"><em>Dictionary of authorities<\/em><\/a>\u00a0, from 1726:<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;AUTHENTICATE is going to Authorize, legalize, approve and affirm in legal form that something is certain and true&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Its presence continues uninterrupted until the last edition of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>In relation to\u00a0<em>authenticate<\/em>\u00a0, it is documented for the first time in 1927 (200 years later) within the\u00a0<em>Manual Dictionary<\/em>\u00a0of the Royal Academy with the following definition:<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;AUTHENTIFY: Useless neologism to authenticate.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This negative mark, &#8220;useless&#8221;, is maintained until the\u00a01984 edition of the\u00a0<em>Dictionary , when it is incorporated as:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;AUTHENTICATE.\u00a0v.tr.\u00a0authenticate, authorize or legalize something\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if the\u00a02014 edition of the\u00a0<em>Dictionary is consulted,\u00a0<\/em><em>authenticate<\/em>\u00a0appears as a synonym of\u00a0<em>authenticate<\/em>\u00a0, and it is this that develops the meaning.<\/p>\n<p>That is to say: authenticating has been admitted in the educated norm since 1726, as opposed to authenticating, correct in the educated norm since 1984.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Current geographic preferences<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Despite the fact that the use of the two verbs is correct, it is interesting to verify if there are preferences according to different geographical areas, as indicated by the\u00a0<em>Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of doubts<\/em>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, in\u00a0<em>CORPES XXI<\/em>\u00a0it is verified that in Mexico, Central America, the Continental Caribbean and the R\u00edo de la Plata there is a clear preference for\u00a0<em>authenticating<\/em>\u00a0, compared to Spain and Chile where\u00a0<em>authenticating<\/em>\u00a0is mainly prioritized .<\/p>\n<p>In a less marked way, in the Andes, the Antilles and Equatorial Guinea,\u00a0<em>authenticating<\/em>\u00a0is also preferred , in the same way that in the United States\u00a0<em>authenticating<\/em>\u00a0registers more frequently .<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Theme preferences<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Another of the resources provided by\u00a0<em>CORPES XXI<\/em>\u00a0is to classify the appearances of the terms by thematic areas.<\/p>\n<p>On this occasion, the largest number of examples of\u00a0<em>authenticating<\/em>\u00a0occurs in issues related to science and technology and, secondly, to politics, economy and justice.\u00a0Regarding the verb\u00a0<em>to authenticate<\/em>\u00a0, it obtains more representation in matters of art, culture and entertainment, as well as in social sciences, belief and thought.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Specialization by areas or topics?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The use of the two verbs is correct with the meaning of &#8220;certify the authenticity&#8221; since 1984.\u00a0<em>Authenticate<\/em>\u00a0has more historical tradition, and greater frequency of use;\u00a0Compared to this, authenticate is of a much more recent creation.<\/p>\n<p>The coincidence with English can favor that a voice appears more, but in this case the two words are correct and with tradition within the language.\u00a0Will specialization in geographic areas or in themes intensify?\u00a0Time will tell.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Author Bio:<\/strong> Amalia Pedrero Gonzalez is Professor of Spanish Language at CEU San Pablo University<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When carrying out administrative procedures, the user is often asked\u00a0to authenticate\u00a0or\u00a0authenticate\u00a0what is requested, indistinctly.\u00a0By using both words, one can consider the influence of the English\u00a0authenticate\u00a0or\u00a0authenticate\u00a0in the use of these verbs.
