Reading is a critical skill for school and life beyond it. Young people need strong reading skills to\u00a0learn and demonstrate their learning<\/a>. Reading skills are not just about performing well in subjects such as English. They are related to performance in subjects like\u00a0science<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0maths<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When it comes to reading, girls typically do better than boys. This was highlighted by the results of a\u00a0major international test<\/a>\u00a0on reading skills, released last week.<\/p>\n

The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) test,\u00a0found<\/a>\u00a0Australian girls in Year 4 scored on average 17 points higher than Australian boys in the same year.<\/p>\n

There was also a gap in terms of attitudes to reading. While more than a third of Australian girls \u201cvery much like reading<\/a>\u201d according to the PIRLS study, less than a quarter of boys feel the same.<\/p>\n

Attitudes toward reading matter<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Research consistently\u00a0makes a link between<\/a>\u00a0students\u2019 reading skills and their attitudes toward reading. If students\u00a0are more motivated<\/a>\u00a0to read, they read more often and\u00a0build<\/a>\u00a0their reading comprehension skills and vocabulary.<\/p>\n

According to Australian Bureau of Statistics data released last month, girls (aged five to 14 years) are also\u00a0more likely than boys<\/a>\u00a0to read for pleasure (77% compared with 68%).<\/p>\n

To close the gender performance gap and enhance the performance of boys, we need to get more boys reading for fun.

A major international test found about 80% of students have \u201cmore than elementary\u201d skills in reading.<\/p>\n
