Have you spotted what distinguishes this hand from the ones you usually see?\u00a0Count the number of fingers…<\/span><\/p>\n

The hand wears a robotic \u201cartificial sixth finger\u201d that\u00a0<\/span>we developed with our collaborator<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, Professor Yoichi Miyawaki of Tokyo University of Electro-communication in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Users can control this sixth finger independently of their other fingers.\u00a0Indeed, we can isolate, with an algorithm, the part of the muscle activity of the forearm that does not contribute to the movements of our usual fingers, and use this signal to control the robotic finger.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is also equipped with a “haptic” sensor (which designates the sense of touch): this senses what a finger would feel and calculates\u00a0<\/span>“haptic feedback”<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, i.e. slight deformations which are applied to the palm of the hand and generate tactile sensations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The user can manipulate this supernumerary limb with minimal learning \u2013 after less than an hour of use for many people.\u00a0Handy for playing the piano!<\/p>\n

We thus study how our body reacts to new limbs \u2013 this is also what is necessary when it has to accept a prosthesis, for example.<\/p>\n

When the representation of the body changes<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Through behavioral and brain imaging experiments,\u00a0<\/span>our work focuses on how the user’s brain \u201cadopts\u201d the sixth finger<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0Changes in\u00a0users’\u00a0<\/span>body perception happen very quickly.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Specifically, we asked users to touch a target line with their own little finger (without seeing their fingers), and this experiment showed that users actually become uncertain about the location of their own little finger in the space.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are currently pursuing these studies in order to directly observe potential changes in the brain activity of users using\u00a0<\/span>functional magnetic resonance imaging<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, related to the representation of their robotic sixth finger.\u00a0For example, we can try to determine which areas of the brain \u201cactivate\u201d when the user moves their finger.<\/span><\/p>\n

In neuroscience, the\u00a0<\/span>\u201cembodiment\u201d of a limb refers to the capacity of the human brain to \u201caccept\u201d this foreign limb<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and to believe that it is part of its body \u2013 we speak in French of \u201cincarnation\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another vivid example is the\u00a0<\/span>“rubber hand illusion”<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, where a user fears being tapped on their hand while their “real” arm is elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n

The human brain can adopt foreign limbs<\/strong><\/h4>\n

This example and other\u00a0scientific <\/a><\/span>studies<\/span><\/a>\u00a0over\u00a0the past few decades<\/a>\u00a0, including our\u00a0own<\/a>\u00a0, have shown that it’s actually quite easy to trick our brains into thinking that other artificial limbs are part of our bodies: it is very adaptable and flexible in what it defines and accepts as our body.<\/span><\/p>\n

This flexibility comes in handy because the human body changes as we grow and age.\u00a0Physical changes can also be caused by accidents or paralysis, to which we are potentially able to adapt.<\/span><\/p>\n

This notion of “incarnation” is also what allows us to accept prostheses to replace or complete lost functions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Limits to the acceptance of a new member?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

With our studies on supernumerary limbs like the sixth finger, we are interested in the limits of this acceptance.\u00a0Is it possible to add new members to our innate body?\u00a0And can we still feel the added limbs as part of our body?<\/span><\/p>\n

Several previous studies have attempted to answer this question by attaching additional artificial limbs, for example\u00a0<\/span>robotic fingers<\/span><\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0<\/span>arms<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, and a\u00a0<\/span>virtual tail<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to humans.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, all of these attempts have relied on “limb replacement” where the added limb is actuated by the movements of an existing limb and any haptic feedback on the added limb is provided to the existing limb – effectively replacing that limb. existing by a new artificial limb.<\/span><\/p>\n

In our study, we are investigating whether our brain can accept a truly independent additional limb, which can be moved independently of any other limb, and from which we can obtain haptic feedback, independent of any other limb.\u00a0It would seem so.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, from an application point of view, our results, that additional limbs can be accepted by our brain, are encouraging for the future development of wearable artificial limbs.<\/span><\/p>\n
