Digital tools now punctuate our daily lives.\u00a0Smartphones, computers and\u00a0social networks<\/a>\u00a0allow us to\u00a0communicate<\/a>\u00a0instantly with people all over the world, to share information and experiences, to work remotely, to organize our personal and professional lives, and even to make romantic encounters. .<\/p>\n

However, this omnipresence can have\u00a0negative effects<\/a>\u00a0on our social relationships.\u00a0Indeed, when we use them in the presence of others, digital tools can interfere with our face-to-face interactions.\u00a0To describe this phenomenon of technological interference, Brandon McDaniel in 2014 proposed the term\u00a0technoference<\/em><\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0Described within the\u00a0couple<\/a>\u00a0relationship and then within the\u00a0parent-child<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0co-parenting<\/a>\u00a0relationship , technoference corresponds to the “moments when technological devices interfere, interrupt and\/or hinder communication and interactions as a couple or as a family in daily life “.<\/p>\n

Technoference encompasses, but is not limited to, situations of\u00a0phubbing<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(contraction of “phone snubbing”, ie telephone and snub) which consists of paying more attention to your phone than to the person you are with.<\/p>\n

Several factors of technoference are beginning to be identified in the scientific literature.\u00a0We can in particular cite the fact of having a very important, even problematic, use of his\u00a0smartphone<\/a>\u00a0, of having difficulties in delimiting boundaries between his digital uses and other activities.\u00a0The disruptive aspect of notifications as well as the design of certain applications and games that can capture attention would also contribute to this.<\/p>\n

However, not everyone has the same perception of these interferences.\u00a0Within the couple, this can vary according to individual factors, such as having an insecure attachment (that is to say, of the anxious type) towards his or her partner.\u00a0Having children with\u00a0behavioral difficulties<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0perceiving their child as difficult<\/a>\u00a0or feeling\u00a0parental stress<\/a>\u00a0could also lead to parental technoference behaviors.<\/p>\n

Technoference can affect the quality of direct exchanges.\u00a0By reducing the attention given to the other, it leads to the paradox of presence-absence where the person is physically present but partially absent psychically.\u00a0In the relationship, it goes hand in hand with\u00a0more conflict and less satisfaction in the relationship<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0When there are children in the couple, it is also associated with the perception of a poorer co-parenting relationship.<\/p>\n

Between parents and children, technoference is linked to a lesser availability of the parent and leads to\u00a0harsher responses<\/a>\u00a0when the child misbehaves.\u00a0Technoference is also associated with a lower quality attachment or parent-child relationship in\u00a0young children<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0school-aged children<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0adolescents<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0We also observe more expressions of negative affect in\u00a0toddlers<\/a>\u00a0when the exchanges are interrupted and more behavioral problems in\u00a0children<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0adolescents<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0However,\u00a0longitudinal studies<\/a>show that the links between technoference and behavioral difficulties in children and adolescents are often two-way, one causing the other, and vice versa.<\/p>\n

Being aware of your digital uses and knowing how to put your smartphone down when you are with someone can limit these inconveniences.\u00a0Some teenagers would have started to go down this path and\u00a0give up their smartphones<\/a>\u00a0…<\/p>\n
