The other day I found out that my friend’s daughter had attempted suicide.\u00a0What a disappointment!\u00a0Good thing she didn’t make it and that she’s recovering from the attempt.\u00a0Mar\u00eda, 23, is nice, has many friends and is studying medicine, which is the dream of her life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apparently no problem.\u00a0His friends would never have thought that something like this could happen.\u00a0And yet, perhaps Maria had sent\u00a0<\/span>signals<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that went unnoticed in her environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

A global problem<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Each year,\u00a0<\/span>more than 700,000 people die by suicide<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0<\/span>In America alone in 2019 , more than 97,000 deaths<\/span><\/a>\u00a0were reported for this reason\u00a0.\u00a0The region with the highest suicide rate is North America with 14.1 per 100,000 inhabitants.\u00a0In South America there are 3.9 per 100,000 inhabitants.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Spain,\u00a0<\/span>according to INE data<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, 4,003 people took their lives in 2021, which represents an increase of 1.6% compared to the previous year.\u00a0This means that every day 11 people die by suicide.\u00a0These are very worrying data, since in 2020 the figure already increased by more than 7.3% compared to 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding sex, 75% of the Spanish deceased are male (2,982), compared to 25% female (1,021), although the latter register more attempts.<\/span><\/p>\n

It should also be noted that it is the leading cause of mortality in people under 29 years of age.\u00a0316 individuals in this age range died by suicide compared to the 299 who died from traffic accidents or the 295 who succumbed to tumors.<\/span><\/p>\n

And furthermore,\u00a0<\/span>deaths in children under 15 years of age have doubled<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n

Access to university is a turning point<\/span><\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0Students begin to become young adults and have to adjust to many changes in their lives.\u00a0Many will move, stop living with their parents, meet new classmates… In addition, they will have to face new academic requirements, evaluation forms, jobs, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

As an aggravating circumstance, health professions students have to face clinical practices, the first gateway to experiences such as illness, suffering or death.\u00a0To this must be added the responsibility and burden that an error can entail.\u00a0<\/span>In a recent study in the United States,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0it was possible to see how the risk of suicide in health personnel was greater than in the general population.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the warning signs?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Ideation is a fundamental element in the process of suicidal behavior, since it generally arises as a precursor and trigger of the attempt.<\/span><\/p>\n

The signs that can alert us to whether a person is having these types of ideas can be of two types: verbal, what they say with their words, and non-verbal, what they communicate to us with their actions.<\/span><\/p>\n
