ChatGPT and art generators such as DALL-E 2, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney have proven their potential, and now millions are wracking their brains over how to get their outputs to look something like the vision in their head.<\/p>\n<p>This is the goal of prompt engineering: the skill of crafting an input to deliver a desired result from generative AI.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being trained on more data and computational resources than ever before, generative AI models\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/ai-might-be-seemingly-everywhere-but-there-are-still-plenty-of-things-it-cant-do-for-now-197050\">have limitations<\/a>. For instance, they\u2019re not trained to produce content aligned with goals such as truth, insight, reliability and originality.<\/p>\n<p>They also lack common sense and a fundamental understanding of the world, which means they can generate flawed (and even nonsensical) content.<\/p>\n<p>As such, prompt engineering is essential for unlocking generative AI\u2019s capabilities. And luckily it isn\u2019t a technical skill. It\u2019s mostly about trial and error, and keeping a few things in mind.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>ChatGPT<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>First, let\u2019s use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chat.openai.com\/\">ChatGPT<\/a>\u00a0to illustrate how prompt engineering can be used for text outputs. If it\u2019s used effectively, ChatGPT can generate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oneusefulthing.substack.com\/p\/i-hope-you-werent-getting-too-comfortable\">essays<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/svpino\/status\/1611357154514186241?lang=en\">computer code<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oneusefulthing.substack.com\/p\/chatgtp-is-my-co-founder\">business plans<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2023-02-16\/chatgpt-writes-cover-letters-job-seekers\">cover letters<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@Pawel.Sierszen\/structuring-creativity-poetry-generation-with-chatgpt-e7ffb4568196\">poetry<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kavishbaghel.com\/jokes-by-chatgpt-5b647fa7d1e5\">jokes<\/a>, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Since it\u2019s a chatbot, you may be inclined to engage with it conversationally. But this isn\u2019t the best approach if you want tailored results. Instead,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oneusefulthing.substack.com\/p\/how-to-use-chatgpt-to-boost-your\">adopt the mindset<\/a>\u00a0that you\u2019re programming the machine to perform a writing task for you.<\/p>\n<p>Create a content brief similar to what you might give a hired professional writer. The key is to provide as much context as possible and use specific and detailed language. You can include information about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>your desired focus, format, style, intended audience and text length<\/li>\n<li>a list of points you want addressed<\/li>\n<li>what perspective you want the text written from, if applicable<\/li>\n<li>and specific requirements, such as\u00a0<em>no jargon<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you want a longer piece, you can generate it in steps. Start with the first few paragraphs and ask ChatGPT to continue in the next prompt. If you\u2019re unsatisfied with a specific portion, you can ask for it to be rewritten according to new instructions.<\/p>\n<p>But remember: no matter how much you tinker with your prompts, ChatGPT is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90833017\/openai-chatgpt-accuracy-gpt-4\">subject to inaccuracies<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aisnakeoil.substack.com\/p\/chatgpt-is-a-bullshit-generator-but\">making things up<\/a>. So don\u2019t take anything at face value. In the example below, the output mentions a \u201creport\u201d that doesn\u2019t exist. It probably included this because my prompt asked it to\u00a0<em>use only reliable sources<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67285\" style=\"width: 690px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67285\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67285\" src=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ChatGPTarticle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ChatGPTarticle.jpg 680w, https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ChatGPTarticle-208x250.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I used prompt engineering to get ChatGPT to write this news article, which provides inaccurate information.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Art generators<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Midjourney is one of the most popular tools for art generation, and one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/how-to-use-midjourney-to-generate-ai-images\/\">easiest for beginners<\/a>. So let\u2019s use it for our next example.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike for text generation, elaborate prompts aren\u2019t necessarily better for image generation. The following example shows how a basic prompt combined with a style keyword is enough to create a variety of interesting images. Your style keyword may refer to a genre, art movement, technique, artist or specific work.<\/p>\n<p>The following images were based on the prompt\u00a0<em>leopard on tree<\/em>\u00a0followed by different style keywords. These were (from the top left clockwise)\u00a0<em>synthwave<\/em>,\u00a0<em>hyperrealist<\/em>,\u00a0<em>expressionist<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>in the style of Zena Holloway<\/em>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/zenaholloway\/?hl=en\">Holloway<\/a>\u00a0is a British photographer known for capturing her subjects in ethereal and somewhat surreal scenes, most often underwater.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67286\" style=\"width: 690px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67286\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67286\" src=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/artgenerator.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/artgenerator.jpg 680w, https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/artgenerator-250x167.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Images generated by Midjourney.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You can also add keywords relating to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>image qualities, such as \u201cbeautiful\u201d or \u201chigh definition\u201d<\/li>\n<li>objects you want pictured<\/li>\n<li>and lighting and colours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With Midjourney, you can even use certain specific commands for different features, including\u00a0<em>\u2013\u2013ar<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>\u2013\u2013aspect<\/em>\u00a0to set the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.midjourney.com\/docs\/aspect-ratios\">aspect ratio<\/a>,\u00a0<em>\u2013\u2013no<\/em>\u00a0to omit certain objects, and\u00a0<em>\u2013\u2013c<\/em>\u00a0to produce more \u201cunusual\u201d results. This command accepts values between 0-100 after it, where the default is 0 and 100 leads to the most unusual result.<\/p>\n<p>You can also use\u00a0<em>\u2013\u2013s<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>\u2013\u2013stylize<\/em>\u00a0to generate more artistic images (at the expense of following the prompt less closely).<\/p>\n<p>The following example applies some of these ideas to create a fantasy image with a dreamlike and futuristic look. The prompt used here was\u00a0<em>dreamy futuristic cityscape, beautiful, clouds, interesting colors, cinematic lighting, 8k, 4k \u2013\u2013ar 7:4 \u2013\u2013c 25 \u2013\u2013no windows.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67287\" style=\"width: 690px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67287\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67287\" src=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/midjourney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/midjourney.jpg 680w, https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/midjourney-250x143.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image generated by Midjourney.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Midjourney accepts multiple prompts for one image if you use a double colon. This can lead to results such as the image below, where I provided separate prompts for the owl and plants. The full prompt was\u00a0<em>oil painting of an ethereal owl :: flowers, colors :: abstract :: wisdom \u2013\u2013ar 7:4<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A more advanced type of prompting is to include an image as part of the prompt. Midjourney will then take the style of that image into account when generating a new one.<\/p>\n<p>A good way to find inspiration and ideas is to explore the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.midjourney.com\/showcase\/recent\/\">Midjourney gallery<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ckovalev.com\/midjourney-ai\/styles\">style libraries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67288\" style=\"width: 690px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67288\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67288\" src=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/floatingbranch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/floatingbranch.jpg 680w, https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/floatingbranch-250x143.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Despite stunning results, generative AI is subject to inconsistencies such as the floating branch in this image. Prompt: woman watching the sunset, magical realism, very beautiful, nature, colourful, very detailed \u2013 \u2013 ar 7:4<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>A career of the future?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As generative AI models enter everyday life, prompting skills are likely to become more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/promptbase.com\/\">in-demand<\/a>, especially from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2023\/02\/openai-text-models-google-search-engine-bard-chatbot-chatgpt-prompt-writing\/672991\/\">employers<\/a>\u00a0looking to get results using AI generators.<\/p>\n<p>Some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0deda1e7-4fbf-46bc-8eee-c2049d783259\">commentators<\/a>\u00a0are asking if becoming a \u201cprompt engineer\u201d may be a way for professionals such as designers, software engineers and content writers to save their jobs from automation, by integrating generative AI into their work. Others have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shubhamsaboo111.medium.com\/prompt-engineering-the-career-of-future-2fb93f90f117\">suggested<\/a>\u00a0prompt engineering will itself be a career.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deeplearning.ai\/the-batch\/prompt-engineering-future-of-ai-or-hack\/\">predict<\/a>\u00a0what role prompt engineering will play as AI models advance.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s almost a given that more sophisticated generators will be able to handle more complex requests, inviting users to stretch their creativity.
