The pandemic has undermined possibly prosperous dreams and has even put an end to stories that have not had a chance to begin.\u00a0Poverty, injustices and inequalities have increased.<\/span><\/p>\n

Faced with this situation, as humanity, we must follow the ethical horizon proposed in the\u00a0<\/span>2030 Agenda<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for Sustainable Development.\u00a0It defines 17 objectives and 169 goals that challenge us to improve our world from an economic, ecological and social perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n

The key to facing the challenge of improving the planet is to raise awareness among humanity as a whole.\u00a0Transferring this commitment to the new generations is one of the challenges of the 21st century.<\/span><\/p>\n

To do so, education must be based on four basic pillars, as they appear in the 1996 UNESCO report\u00a0<\/span>Education contains a treasure<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Learning to know<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0: discovering and understanding every detail of the world to which we belong.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Learning to do<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0: acquiring knowledge and skills that allow the subject to act from their own technical, procedural and methodological resources.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Learning to be<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0: developing critical thinking that provides personal autonomy and active citizenship.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Learning to live together<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0: living in a culture based on respect for the rights of others, as well as for the planet itself.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Education in values, beyond theory<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    In this contextual framework, the learning of values \u200b\u200band the corresponding rejection of anti-values \u200b\u200bmust be a priority axis in educational processes and not remain\u00a0<\/span>mere theoretical approaches<\/span><\/a>\u00a0undermined by the weight of curricular elements.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Education in values \u200b\u200bconstitutes our main tool to transmit said social ethics.\u00a0Not only from the family, as the basis of society, but from the educational system itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The role of the teacher<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The role of the teaching staff is necessary to help the individual to develop as a person (learn to be) and learn to live in society (learn to live together).<\/span><\/p>\n

    During the school day, these professionals must encourage each student to discern between personal, social and moral values.\u00a0And even help them understand how to put them into practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The pedagogical synergy generated between teachers and students will allow the growth of the latter, favoring their ability to make decisions and promoting integration in society with respect to individual differences.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Now, what skills should they put into practice and transmit in the classroom?<\/span><\/p>\n

    Key competencies<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The path to increase ethical awareness is linked to the following competencies that guide teaching practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Personal and social competences.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>The close relationship with the students is a learning opportunity.\u00a0Learnings such as managing relationships in a constructive and empathetic way.\u00a0In addition to promoting skills, knowledge and experiences that allow the integral development of the subjects.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Cultural competencies.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Respect for the different cultures or ethnic groups existing in the classroom is paramount.\u00a0This position supposes an educational scaffolding that will allow the sociocultural approach between equals from the inclusion.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Emotional competencies.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Conflict is inherent to the human being, therefore, its peaceful management must be transmitted.\u00a0And also generate new forms of collaboration among students who do not quite understand each other.\u00a0Without forgetting the importance of providing tools for emotional regulation with autonomy in these situations.<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Ethical competencies.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Equality and respect for others, solidarity in the face of vulnerability, should be guides for teaching practice.\u00a0Take advantage of teaching as a space for critical reflection in order to develop a commitment to social justice.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Initiatives and service learning<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      Fortunately, there are already obvious signs that teachers are advancing in this great work.\u00a0Within the framework of the sustainable development goals, we find the\u00a0<\/span>fruits<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of numerous\u00a0<\/span>service learning<\/span><\/a>\u00a0initiatives .<\/span><\/p>\n

      Specifically, the Spanish Service-Learning Network has compiled\u00a0<\/span>100 good practices<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in this regard, collecting experiences developed by 300 educational centers as well as 430 social entities.\u00a0Good practices that have children from 3 years of age to adults over 18 as protagonists.<\/span><\/p>\n

      An example of this is the experience developed by the\u00a0<\/span>Malala Early Childhood and Primary Education Center (Seville)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, called the\u00a0<\/span>\u201cMalala tribe\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0.\u00a0Or the\u00a0<\/span>\u201clet’s take care of the grandparents\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0project , carried out by nursing students, who make visible the importance of home care for the elderly dependents.<\/span><\/p>\n

      The development of communication skills between generations, as well as the values \u200b\u200bof empathy and respect, are some of the numerous benefits of this type of experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Ethical and social responsibility is complex.\u00a0<\/span>Although, thanks to numerous efforts, there are initiatives to improve our society, it is still a long way to go.<\/span><\/p>\n
