Until about 2020, universities used cryptocurrencies only to\u00a0pay ransoms to criminals attacking their networks<\/a>. A fast payment to criminals helped victim universities restore their networks quickly.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0increasing public adoption<\/a>\u00a0of cryptocurrencies, especially\u00a0among young consumers<\/a>, universities are exploring them, too. As of early 2022,\u00a020% of U.S. consumers had used<\/a>\u00a0cryptocurrencies. According to an\u00a0April 2022 report<\/a>, 28% of 13- to 39-year-olds had purchased at least one type of cryptocurrency. Among consumers in this age group,\u00a013% had purchased and 38% were interested in<\/a>\u00a0a particular offshoot of cryptocurrencies called non-fungible tokens.<\/p>\n

Cryptocurrencies have lost market value from a peak of\u00a0about US$3 trillion in November 2021<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0$804 billion in November 2022<\/a>. And their uses are not as widespread as they were as recently as 2021. Despite\u00a0the crashes in value<\/a>\u00a0and loss in confidence due to\u00a0the collapse of some large crypto exchanges<\/a>, universities appear to me to be open to a potential market recovery.<\/p>\n

In my recent\u00a0research<\/a>, I have looked at educational institutions\u2019 use of crypto assets such as\u00a0cryptocurrencies<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0non-fungible tokens<\/a>. I see three ways that universities are using cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n

1. Accepting tuition payments<\/strong><\/h4>\n

People want to be\u00a0paid in cryptocurrencies<\/a>\u00a0and use it to\u00a0buy goods and services<\/a>. Businesses are responding to this trend, setting up systems to\u00a0accept payments in cryptocurrencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Universities are responding, too.\u00a0Since May 2022<\/a>, Bentley University outside Boston has allowed students to pay tuition with\u00a0cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, ethereum and USDC<\/a>. Some universities accept cryptocurrency payments only for certain programs. For instance, in the fall of 2021, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania\u00a0announced it would accept<\/a>\u00a0cryptocurrencies to pay tuition in its executive education program in the\u00a0economics of blockchain and digital assets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Paying tuition in cryptocurrency is faster, cheaper and easier for international students, because doing so lets them avoid paying fees for\u00a0currency conversion and international transfer transactions<\/a>. And universities benefit by receiving cryptocurrency payments immediately, rather than facing a delay of several days for overseas bank transactions.<\/p>\n

Universities around the world deal differently with crypto\u2019s price volatility. The University of Nicosia in Cyprus\u00a0immediately converts bitcoin<\/a>\u00a0to euros. But Paraguay\u2019s Universidad Americana\u00a0evaluates price trends<\/a>\u00a0before converting into its national currency.<\/p>\n

2. Receiving crypto gifts<\/strong><\/h4>\n

It is becoming increasingly common for universities to accept cryptocurrency gifts. In 2021, the public charity organization Fidelity Charitable received the equivalent of\u00a0US$331 million in digital gifts<\/a>, which was about 12 times more than in 2020.<\/p>\n

As of 2021, technology company The Giving Block agreed to help\u00a0about 100 universities<\/a>, such as the University of Arizona, the University of Maryland, the University of Alabama, Catholic University and Wake Forest University, handle cryptocurrency payments and donations. Some universities have added cryptocurrency guidelines on their \u201cHow to Give\u201d pages and\u00a0provided instructions for donors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In early November 2022, Vitalik Buterin, a co-founder of the ethereum blockchain, gave the University of Maryland\u00a0$9.4 million in cryptocurrency<\/a>. The money will be used to fund public health research.<\/p>\n

3. Exploring non-fungible tokens<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Some universities are successfully capitalizing on this trend to raise money, and to strengthen connections with alumni.<\/p>\n

When blockchain technology,\u00a0a database of transaction records stored in many computers at once<\/a>, was first invented, it supported only money-like assets such as bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The technology has evolved to create a special kind of digital asset called non-fungible tokens. A non-fungible token is a unique image, video or audio file\u00a0representing an item such as a physical painting<\/a>\u00a0or a song stored on blockchains. The file, and information about who owns it, are stored on a blockchain.<\/p>\n

Of course, a non-fungible token is not the asset itself, but is a\u00a0one-of-a-kind, exclusive digital version<\/a>\u00a0of it, which some people value and view as\u00a0a social status symbol<\/a>. One non-fungible token artwork, \u201cThe Merge,\u201d which was created by a pseudonymous artist, was sold for\u00a0$91.8 million<\/a>\u00a0in December 2021.<\/p>\n

In June 2022, the University of California, Berkeley minted a non-fungible token based on the\u00a0Nobel Prize\u2013winning research of immunologist James Allison<\/a>. The token\u2019s auction raised\u00a0about $50,000<\/a>. The proceeds funded immunology research.<\/p>\n

Colleges such as Brigham Young University and Syracuse University are\u00a0bundling non-fungible tokens with real-world perks<\/a>\u00a0such as VIP seats for events they organized. Some people are willing to pay more for the combination than for the real-world items alone.This increases non-fungible tokens\u2019 attractiveness.<\/p>\n

In May 2022, Harvard University announced that every graduate from Harvard College would\u00a0receive a commemorative non-fungible token<\/a>. And Duke University grants\u00a0completion certificates in the form of non-fungible tokens<\/a>\u00a0for those who pass one of its blockchain technology courses.<\/p>\n

Georgetown University\u2019s McDonough School of Business gave the members of its class of 2020 non-fungible tokens as a gift. The tokens were digital twins of the physical 2020 Challenge Coin gifts\u00a0given to the students as a token of appreciation<\/a>. The coin\u2019s back features the building that\u00a0houses the university\u2019s business school<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Universities are using cryptocurrencies to manage operations, raise funds and enhance relationships with students and alumni. If these assets recover from their current crash and begin to boom again, these trends may further accelerate.<\/p>\n
