Bullying is one\u00a0of<\/em>\u00a0the biggest concerns parents have for their child’s safety and well-being \u2013 and it often leaves many of us stressed and dizzy.<\/p>\n

A study conducted by\u00a0the National Center for Social Research (NatCen)<\/a>\u00a0in the UK found that 47% of children reported experiencing\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0at the age of 14.\u00a0Often the victims are minorities and marginalized groups.<\/p>\n

However, the study also found that children who shared these experiences with their parents were more likely to ‘get out’ of\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0.\u00a0Here are five important ways to help them:<\/p>\n

1) Recognize the signs of\u00a0bullying<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Signs of bullying<\/em><\/a>\u00a0include if your child shows behavioral changes, becomes more introverted, doesn’t want to go to school, or even experiences complications from illness.<\/p>\n

If your child reveals that they are being\u00a0bullied<\/em>\u00a0, first thank them for having the courage to tell them.\u00a0Explain to them that this is an important first step in solving the problem.<\/p>\n

Try your best to listen to them without getting irritated or angry.\u00a0Stay calm and reassure them that you are there to help.\u00a0Sensitively, ask carefully what happened, what the\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0was like, how they felt after experiencing this, so you can calm them down and begin to empathize with them.<\/p>\n

Indeed, you may feel a great temptation to act immediately.\u00a0But try to think of a solution together with your child. Ask them how best you can help.<\/p>\n

The experience of\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0can drop a child’s self-confidence.\u00a0So, convince them of the advantages they have.\u00a0Accompany them to do any activity that can ease their anxiety.\u00a0Always remind them that you will always be there for them.<\/p>\n

In many countries, there are also\u00a0a number of services<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0platforms<\/a>\u00a0that can help provide appropriate advice for parents of victims of\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

2) Understand the dynamics of\u00a0bullying<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Bullying<\/em>\u00a0is often\u00a0defined<\/a>\u00a0as an intentional and repeated act, which relies on an imbalance of power.\u00a0But, even if it’s only happened once, you should still take\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0seriously \u2013 especially if your child decides to talk about it.<\/p>\n

Talk to them about the various forms of\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0, and how they can manifest: it can be not only physical attacks or threats, but also mocking, ostracizing, spreading rumors, to forcing someone to do something they don’t want.\u00a0Explain to your child that this can also be\u00a0facilitated by technology and social media<\/a>\u00a0(eg through\u00a0cyberbullying<\/em>\u00a0).\u00a0Show you understand that\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0can target different individuals and groups with varying intensity.<\/p>\n

This can help teach children to recognize and understand\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0as well as demonstrate empathy for others.<\/p>\n

We also need to encourage children to always look around them for\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0.\u00a0The reason is, in many incidents there are eyewitnesses \u2013 for example their playing partners \u2013 who are reluctant to report for fear of becoming victims or feel bad about \u201cspreading disgrace\u201d.<\/p>\n

3) Don’t take revenge<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Encourage them not to\u00a0take revenge<\/a>\u00a0aggressively.\u00a0The will to fight back was understandable.\u00a0However, this usually tends to make things worse and can cause your child to get hurt, laughed at, or even end up being the one to be punished.<\/p>\n

We should prioritize a more assertive approach to dealing with\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0, rather than an aggressive or even passive one.\u00a0Remind them to get out of the\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0situation as soon as possible and report it to an adult.<\/p>\n

4) Report<\/strong><\/h4>\n

If your child finds it difficult to deal with\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0even with your help, contact the school immediately.\u00a0However, make sure you talk to your child first.\u00a0Explain to them that this is a step that must be taken.<\/p>\n

You may wish to confront the parents of the child who abused your child.\u00a0However, this can have negative consequences for you and your child.<\/p>\n

All UK<\/a>\u00a0schools\u00a0, for example, are required by law to have an anti-bullying policy that details how\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0is reported and handled .\u00a0Ask the school how to do it.<\/p>\n

Support and oversee the school during this process, because they both have a goal to stop\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0.\u00a0Don’t forget to have an initial discussion with your child’s teacher.\u00a0They may be able to involve other colleagues in helping your child through school resources.\u00a0Together, develop a strategy for dealing with the incident, including the next steps.<\/p>\n

After your child has narrated an incident of\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0, you can also write down in a notebook who the perpetrator was, and what they did or said \u2013 and how often, when, and where it happened.\u00a0Save data or records related to messages or SMS, as well as uploads or comments on social media.\u00a0But still give the school room to work things out with your child.<\/p>\n

However, if you feel that the school is still not doing its best, you may consider reporting to the principal, school committee, local education officer or, in the UK, the\u00a0Ofsted<\/a>\u00a0agency which oversees and regulates the school.<\/p>\n

5) Don’t let\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0interfere with your child’s education<\/strong><\/h4>\n

No matter how bad the situation, make sure your child doesn’t stop going to school.\u00a0This can make the situation worse, and it means your child will miss out on education.<\/p>\n

Whatever you do, remember that a calm, systematic, gradual response is the best way to deal with\u00a0bullying<\/em>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Bullying<\/em>\u00a0is a serious problem in schools and society at large.\u00a0Bullying<\/em>\u00a0is wrong, and we must support schools to create an environment where all children feel safe to thrive and learn.<\/p>\n
