At a large public college in the Midwest, a graduate told me how much a dog helped keep his spirits up: \u201cIt was such a comfort to be able to pet this animal, especially when my family and my own dog started to potty. miss me \u201d, told me this young person who participates\u00a0in my research<\/a>\u00a0on these new types of student support.<\/p>\n

Each week, he and three comrades spent 35 minutes with what is now known as a “therapy dog” on American campuses, spending time petting him and giving him treats.<\/p>\n

Another student in the same program told me that these moments were precious in preparing for demanding exams: \u201cI felt like it allowed me to relax before stressful deadlines.\u00a0”<\/p>\n

Such scenes are more and more frequent on the campuses of American universities.\u00a0Faced with mental health problems that have continued to\u00a0progress<\/a>\u00a0in recent years, universities have notably resorted to therapy animals, which\u00a0students<\/a>\u00a0do not hesitate to come and see when the challenges of student life, in particular the\u00a0personal workload<\/a>\u00a0, weigh on them.<\/p>\n

As an\u00a0expert in these programs<\/a>\u00a0– better known as dog-assisted interventions –\u00a0I have studied<\/a>\u00a0how this contact with a pet\u00a0can improve<\/a>\u00a0the well-being of young people.\u00a0It shows that it helps them strengthen\u00a0their sense of belonging<\/a>\u00a0, to better\u00a0cope with homesickness<\/a>\u00a0and loneliness, while\u00a0reducing anxiety<\/a>\u00a0and stress.<\/p>\n

Some of these results can be explained by the way the human body reacts to interactions with therapy animals.\u00a0A 2019 survey found that college students who spent even ten minutes petting a cat or dog saw\u00a0their cortisol levels drop<\/a>\u00a0significantly.<\/p>\n

Regular visits<\/strong><\/h4>\n

According to a 2017 study of 150 establishments, 62% of them\u00a0had an<\/a>\u00a0animal-\u00a0assisted intervention program<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

These programs are not organized quite the same from place to place.\u00a0In some, a teacher and his animal\u00a0come several times<\/a>\u00a0during the semester to the campus library.\u00a0Then the students meet the dog one by one or in small groups, and spend between a few minutes and three quarters of an hour with him.<\/p>\n

In other cases, things are more structured: a number of students are sponsored by a therapy dog \u200b\u200band their handler, and there are schedules to meet them.<\/p>\n

The participating animals are of good temperament and well trained.\u00a0The cost of registering them as a therapy dog \u200b\u200bis low for owners.\u00a0With the Pet Partners association, one of the most extensive, for example, it costs\u00a0<\/span>$ 15 to $ 30<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to take the assessment, $ 95 to register with therapy teams and $ 70 to renew your registration.<\/span><\/p>\n

The programs are coordinated by teachers or by staff from different departments such as psychologists or student services coordinators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Positive testimonials<\/strong><\/h4>\n

As I explained above,\u00a0<\/span>in my thesis<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, I asked a series of open-ended questions to young graduates to evaluate these interventions.\u00a0Several people interviewed told me how much they appreciated being able to take this kind of break in their study schedule.\u00a0\u201cThe experience forced me to organize myself better in order to be able to take this leisure time,\u201d noted one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe therapy dog \u200b\u200bis so calm,\u201d said another.\u00a0This mixture of energy and serenity helped me relieve tension with each session.\u00a0“<\/span><\/p>\n

This joy is shared because the dogs would just as much appreciate coming to spend time with the students.\u00a0Many teachers have told me that their companions were excited when the date of the visit to the university came up, and even happier when they arrived near the campus.<\/span><\/p>\n
