Many students across Australia wear traditional school uniforms. These consist of button-up shirts, tailored trousers, pleated skirts or tunics, and black leather shoes.<\/p>\n

This is despite the fact most students,\u00a0teachers and parents support<\/a>\u00a0a move away from traditional uniforms to ones more comfortable for students and more supportive of a range of activities they do at school.<\/p>\n

Schools across Australia set their own uniform policy, informed by their jurisdiction\u2019s education authority. Here are four reasons schools should consider offering students the option to wear sports-like uniforms every day, starting with the savings for parents.<\/p>\n

1. Traditional uniforms are expensive<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The\u00a0average cost<\/a>\u00a0in Victoria for a primary-school student uniform appropriate for summer and winter, as well the sports uniform, is around A$330 on average. For secondary schools this increases to around an average of $526 per student. Catholic and independent school uniforms are consistently\u00a0more expensive<\/a>\u00a0than ones in government schools.<\/p>\n

The biggest saving that comes from shifting to an everyday policy of sports uniforms is that parents don\u2019t need to buy multiple uniforms. If parents only need to buy a sports uniform,\u00a0this could save<\/a>\u00a0around $167 for primary-aged and $363 for secondary-aged students (based on Victorian figures).<\/p>\n

Sports uniforms are cheaper than traditional uniforms. Most sports uniforms consist of a tracksuit, polo shirt with school logo, sport shorts and trainers \u2013 at a total\u00a0average cost<\/a>\u00a0of $163. Increasing mass-production of a sports uniform may reduce this cost even further.<\/p>\n

2. Teachers, students and parents prefer sports uniforms<\/strong><\/h4>\n

In a positive step,\u00a0all government schools<\/a>\u00a0across Australia must now offer a shorts or trouser option to both boys and girls. Most schools choose to offer tailored\u00a0shorts or trousers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Students don\u2019t like wearing traditional uniforms. Studies show 62% of\u00a0primary school students<\/a>\u00a0and 72% of\u00a0secondary school students<\/a>\u00a0would prefer to wear a sports uniform every day.<\/p>\n

Overall,\u00a0four in five<\/a>\u00a0parents and\u00a0six in ten<\/a>\u00a0teachers support a change in uniform policy allowing students to wear sports uniforms every day.<\/p>\n

3. Sports uniforms support physical activity<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Most students\u00a0think<\/a>\u00a0they would be more active if they could wear their sports uniform every day. Older students, who are\u00a0generally less active<\/a>, more strongly\u00a0agree<\/a>\u00a0they\u2019d be more active wearing sports uniforms every day.<\/p>\n

Nine in ten parents\u00a0agree<\/a>\u00a0school uniforms should support physical activity.<\/p>\n

Most\u00a0Australians recognise<\/a>\u00a0physical activity is good for physical and mental health. Beyond health, active students\u00a0do better in class<\/a>, having better concentration, attention and classroom behaviours, which can lead to improved academic performance.<\/p>\n

Research suggests by changing from a traditional uniform to a sports uniform, primary-aged students can\u00a0improve<\/a>\u00a0their physical activity. Changing to sports uniforms\u00a0may be even<\/a>\u00a0more<\/a>\u00a0important for Australian girls, who are typically\u00a0less<\/a>\u00a0active than\u00a0boys<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But uniform changes are just one ingredient to increase young people\u2019s physical activity. Combining factors such as the option to wear\u00a0sports uniforms daily<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0classroom energisers<\/a>, such as short\u00a0active breaks<\/a>\u00a0from seated teaching,\u00a0safe active travel<\/a>\u00a0routes to school (such as bike lanes) and\u00a0subsidised cost of sport<\/a>\u00a0increases students\u2019 physical activity.<\/p>\n

The sports uniforms make it easier for students to engage in these other types of activities on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

4. Traditional uniforms are uncomfortable<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u201cUniforms hold me back from running\u201d, was\u00a0one of a number<\/a>\u00a0of reasons given by South Australian secondary school students to not being active at recess.<\/p>\n

Unlike schools in other countries, we\u2019ve heard some Australian primary schools do not have changing facilities to allow students to switch between active wear and traditional uniforms at recess.<\/p>\n

Workplace dress policies are almost always appropriate for the type of work required by employees. For example, tradies wear reflective active wear. So why not in schools? In a country with a climate like Australia\u2019s, we must ask if traditional school uniforms are fit for purpose.<\/p>\n

Challenges and next steps<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Only\u00a0one-third<\/a>\u00a0of school principals support swapping to sports uniforms every day. Among the two-thirds who don\u2019t support the change are those who they say sports uniforms are inappropriate for formal occasions. Half also say there is no evidence to support making a change.<\/p>\n

We strongly encourage uniform suppliers to work with school departments to design sports uniforms that encourage physical activity, and that are also smart and appropriate for formal school occasions.<\/p>\n

As a parent or student, you can ask your school to consider offering the option to wear a daily sports uniform.<\/p>\n
