Painfully brought back to the forefront with the death of Alisha, 14, a victim of persecution by high school friends and found drowned in Argenteuil, in the Paris suburbs, in March 2021, bullying is a major concern for school.\u00a0Beyond the most serious cases, it is estimated that one\u00a0in ten pupils<\/a>\u00a0has already been confronted with bullying and violence exerted by peers in the school environment.<\/p>\n

The fight against this phenomenon involves identifying and following the victims, but also supposes taking into account the aggressors, as shown by the recent suicide by defenestration of an 11-year-old schoolboy accused of harassment in his college.<\/p>\n

In France, the subject has long been taboo, and included in the broader issue of school violence,\u00a0as<\/a>\u00a0B\u00e9reng\u00e8re Stassin\u00a0explained<\/a>\u00a0in 2018 on The Conversation.\u00a0The phenomenon is now well identified and now worries our entire society: 85% of parents of students are worried that their child will be the victim of bullying between peers at school and 93% of the 2000 respondents to a recent survey of\u00a0the FIFG<\/a>\u00a0on the subject consider that the phenomenon is not fully understood by the public authorities.<\/p>\n

How were awareness and public responses built?\u00a0Back on some essential steps.<\/p>\n

First definitions<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The theorization of bullying between children dates back to about fifty years.\u00a0In the 1970s, in Norway, after several child suicides, Dan Olweus, a Swedish psychologist, launched a major national survey and was the first to\u00a0analyze<\/a>\u00a0and define schoolbullying: “Aggressive and systematic abuse of power in long term “.\u00a0A few years later, his team clarified the\u00a0definition<\/a>\u00a0, which still prevails:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will say that a child or young person is the victim of bullying when another child or young person or group of young people laugh at or insult him.\u00a0It is also about bullying when a child is threatened, beaten, pushed around, locked in a room, when he receives offensive or mean messages.\u00a0These situations can last and it is difficult for the child or young person in question to defend themselves.\u00a0A child who is continually laughed at is the victim of bullying.\u00a0On the other hand, it is not a question of bullying when two children of equal force fight or argue \u201d.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
