Yoga has conquered the world.\u00a0The postures of the crane, the raven or the half-grasshopper are all images of an activity that has become a global phenomenon in a few decades.\u00a0Sports activity, spiritual awakening, art of living, yoga has become a \u201cworld-activity\u201d.\u00a0How to transpose into the school universe one of the most widespread sports practices in the world?\u00a0How could yoga help transform teaching?<\/p>\n
Marie Kock<\/a>\u00a0showed how the worldwide diffusion of this ancestral activity had transformed it into a \u201cnew Age\u201d practice, into a relaxing activity for people in search of personal development and happiness.\u00a0A fashion victim and\u00a0reinvented by the West<\/a>\u00a0, yoga has become a\u00a0business<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n It is also a political weapon.\u00a0Narendra Modi’s government of India has made it a tool of\u00a0nationalist political glorification<\/a>\u00a0and seeks to maintain its global leadership in yoga.\u00a0Celebrated on an\u00a0international day<\/a>\u00a0, June 21, yoga therefore goes beyond the simple status of an activity of bodily expression.<\/p>\n The activity is also recognized as the\u00a0intangible heritage of humanity<\/a>\u00a0and its presence is global, practiced by nearly three million French people and hundreds of millions of people around the world.\u00a0As a sports activity, it has national, regional and local structures and a multitude of associations which disseminate these different practices.<\/p>\n During the lockdown, the word yoga was\u00a0one of the most requested<\/a>\u00a0in search engines.\u00a0We have seen that purchases of yoga mats have\u00a0increased dramatically<\/a>\u00a0during the first month of confinement in France!\u00a0Likewise, during this period of unprecedented health crisis, blog articles and yoga initiation videos, live or replayed, have grown exponentially.<\/p>\n Sporting and relaxation practice, yoga has the aim of spiritual awakening through the knowledge of one’s body and one’s breathing.\u00a0Studies show the benefits it brings when\u00a0combined with meditation<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0Its regular practice improves attention, concentration, stress management and emotions by\u00a0reducing the level of cortisol<\/a>\u00a0, a stress hormone.\u00a0The positive effects of yoga on<\/a>\u00a0cognitive\u00a0learning are<\/a>\u00a0starting to be recognized, as are their contributions\u00a0to the well-being of students and teachers<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n Yoga is already present in French schools, in\u00a0nursery<\/a>\u00a0, primary and\u00a0secondary<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0This movement seems to be growing and we are undertaking a study to quantify this growth, which is still poorly known in France.\u00a0Many teachers are showing their growing interest\u00a0in introducing yoga into education<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n The first initiatives to introduce yoga to school were carried out by teachers who practiced yoga themselves.\u00a0For them, yoga was defined as a set of bodily and respiratory exercises which did not exclude a spiritual aim.\u00a0Currently, more and more teachers are emphasizing the interest of yoga for a coordinated work on breathing and knowledge of one’s body.\u00a0The spiritual dimension is less and less present for the benefit of physical and mental well-being as well as the creation of a quality school climate for learning through an activity of\u00a0active relaxation<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n Approved associations, such as\u00a0the RYE association<\/a>\u00a0, support the many initiatives within the National Education which, for its part, offers\u00a0yoga<\/a>\u00a0training and\u00a0workshops<\/a>\u00a0.Stress management<\/strong><\/h4>\n
