\nHalloween is approaching and the season lends itself to the discovery (or rediscovery) of tales and legends, especially as witches are in the limelight of many children’s books.\u00a0They can be beneficent or evil figures, according to the tradition from which they come.<\/p>\n

The first figure, that of the evil witch, often depicted as old and ugly, comes directly from the Renaissance when the witch hunt was in full swing in Europe and the north of the American continent.\u00a0Many negative clich\u00e9s made at that time – such as the hooked nose, the magic broom, or the Sabbath, these nocturnal assemblies of witches – have infiltrated youth literature through fairy tales.<\/p>\n

As Mona Chollet explains in her book\u00a0Witches, the unconquered power of women<\/em><\/a>\u00a0, from 1900 and the publication of the\u00a0Wizard of Oz<\/em>\u00a0Frank Baum, the figure of the “good witch” (Glinda, the good witch of the south ) appeared in literature.\u00a0Many books have continued in this line in the XX\u00a0th<\/sup>\u00a0\u00a0and XXI\u00a0th<\/sup>\u00a0\u00a0centuries depicting friendly witches who use their magic for good.<\/p>\n

One of the first youth books to tell the story of a witch is\u00a0Amandine Malabul<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(original title\u00a0The Worst Witch<\/em><\/a>\u00a0) by Jill Murphy, published in 1974. This book mixes both a\u00a0school<\/a>\u00a0story and a story of magic for create a new sub-category in youth literature, becoming internationally known with the\u00a0Harry Potter series<\/em>\u00a0.\u00a0Amandine Malabul<\/em>is the story of a little witch, very clumsy and unlucky, who enters sixth at the Academy of Sorcery.\u00a0She can not cast spells, her tabby cat (and not black as the school wants) can not hold on her broom and she even turned one of her friends into a pig without doing it on purpose!\u00a0This series of eight books (published between 1974 and 2018) is very accessible to young readers and can be extended with the three seasons of the Netflix adaptation (2017-2019) of the same name.<\/p>\n

Even French youth literature presents small clumsy and harmless witches, like\u00a0Touloup\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0who, despite her involvement, can not put into practice the teachings she receives.\u00a0In these stories written by Calouan, illustrated by Cynthia Bernab\u00e9 and published by Editions Lutin Malin reign a smile and a good mood conducive to conquer young readers.<\/p>\n
