The time children spend watching television or mobile phones is a common concern among parents.\u00a0And it is more so in summer when every day becomes a blank check full of hours with our children.<\/p>\n

We live immersed in a digital society that subjects current parents to the social pressure of \u201czero screens\u201d.\u00a0This pressure is a mantra that is repeated constantly in the media and our social environment.<\/p>\n

That scenario without technology collides with current consumption.\u00a0The multiple options generate stress and anxiety among parents, which ends in a sense of failure when they end up offering children a content that they are not totally convinced of.<\/p>\n

You have to look for content quality<\/h4>\n

Some studies<\/a>\u00a0state that children between 2 and 11 years spend 23 hours a week watching television.\u00a0To eliminate this negative feeling in both parents and children, remember that not all children’s content is the same.\u00a0It is time to change the debate about the time of child consumption of screens and expand the conversation towards the quality of the contents.<\/p>\n

The recommendation of the American Association of Pediatrics is well known, which is summarized in the\u00a02 + 2 rule<\/a>\u00a0(up to 2 years no screens, from two, no more than one hour a day).\u00a0However, in recent times this formula has been nuanced.<\/p>\n

This year researchers from the British Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health associations have published that\u00a0there is not enough empirical evidence<\/a>\u00a0to adequately regulate screen time in children (\u00a0the same lack of data<\/a>\u00a0that prevents affirming that there is a negative impact on health) .<\/p>\n

Educational possibilities, more than risks<\/h4>\n

In that context, it seems necessary to introduce in the public debate a positive look towards the contents for children.\u00a0To do this, we must highlight\u00a0empirical studies<\/a>\u00a0that value educational possibilities and not just risks.\u00a0That is, we must give space to studies that\u00a0dismantle myths<\/a>about the negative effects of screens.\u00a0At that time the educational value appears.<\/p>\n

Are Disney drawings so bad?<\/h4>\n

What do the studies tell us?\u00a0That\u00a0Disney drawings can help<\/a>\u00a0convey positive values \u200b\u200bin the short term, such as helping peers.\u00a0Or that series like\u00a0Daniel El Tigre<\/a><\/em>\u00a0encourage empathy.\u00a0In addition, children’s series are a path to children’s\u00a0bilingualism<\/a>\u00a0if the exhibition is in another language, such as English.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that watching children’s series\u00a0does not replace reading<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0Having a child handle screens does not mean that he will not read books.\u00a0On the contrary, there are studies that indicate that the screens encourage pleasure in reading in general, both digitally and on paper.<\/p>\n

In the case of developing countries or communities in remote geographies,\u00a0mobile devices are a promising tool to bring education to disadvantaged children<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

In this positive context, how can parents value the quality of television for their children?<\/p>\n

We leave three important ideas:<\/p>\n

Choose series with narratives appropriate for the child’s age.\u00a0<\/strong>The first series can be small stories accompanied by songs.\u00a0These songs introduce the little ones in the world of stories through music (\u00a0Little Baby Bums<\/em>\u00a0).\u00a0Thus children can begin to imitate their movements and voices.\n

    After two years, small stories are introduced that offer them role models and spaces to understand the world around them.\u00a0It is important to choose stories with set-up and leisurely narrative rhythm.\u00a0Thus they keep the attention and follow the story (\u00a0Peppa Pig<\/em>,\u00a0Pororo<\/em>\u00a0,\u00a0Puffin Rock<\/em>\u00a0).<\/li>\n

  2. Accompaniment of the parents.\u00a0<\/strong>Parents and educators are a fundamental piece.\u00a0It is good to interact with the children, ask them questions and comment on the scenes.\u00a0In short, open a dialogue with minors that allows them to better analyze what they see.\n

    This aspect is key, as recent studies show that parents who have a negative view of television make their children\u00a0take less advantage of children’s series<\/a>\u00a0.<\/li>\n

  3. See those stories with other transmedia cultural activities such as reading, painting, or puzzles.\u00a0<\/strong>The series, by their audiovisual nature, immerse children in a powerful world of sensations, emotions and values.\u00a0This is complemented by cultural activities related to those contents (\u00a0Peppa Pig<\/em>\u00a0books\u00a0are a bestseller because the series arouses interest in reading about the character and not vice versa).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In addition, children develop other cognitive and emotional skills that the series does not cover.\u00a0It is rarely noted that the series are the gateway to other cultural products.<\/p>\n

    Rather than focusing the debate on screens yes or no screens, we must broaden the conversation to\u00a0how to promote media education<\/a>\u00a0for children and parents.\u00a0It is necessary for parents to learn to choose appropriate children’s content that contributes to the child’s learning.\u00a0Not everything goes and there are big differences between the values \u200b\u200bof some contents or others.<\/p>\n

    As we can see, these are three very simple tips to apply.\u00a0Not following these premises is throwing a coin in the air where we do not even know which of the two sides is what favors us.<\/p>\n

    A positive attitude towards the media is vital to take advantage of technology.\u00a0Something necessary for the digital future in which they are already immersed.<\/p>\n
