{"id":48469,"date":"2019-06-28T13:42:43","date_gmt":"2019-06-28T20:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/world.edu\/?p=48469"},"modified":"2019-06-28T13:42:43","modified_gmt":"2019-06-28T20:42:43","slug":"university-offers-ten-separate-orientations-for-native-americans-black-students-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/world.edu\/university-offers-ten-separate-orientations-for-native-americans-black-students-others\/","title":{"rendered":"University offers ten separate orientations for Native Americans, black students, others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48470\" src=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/school-segregation-1500x700-final.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/school-segregation-1500x700-final.jpg 680w, https:\/\/world.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/school-segregation-1500x700-final-250x117.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Asian, Latino students also get specialized programs<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the largest universities in California hosts nearly a dozen alternative orientations for its students, specially tailoring the events to fit numerous ethnicities and demographics, including Asian Pacific, black and Native American individuals<\/p>\n<p>The University of California, Berkeley\u2019s website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/orientation.berkeley.edu\/once-here\/special-programs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">describes<\/a>\u00a0the 10 specialized orientations as \u201cadditional programming\u201d that students may attend apart from the standard \u201cGolden Bear Orientation.\u201d Most of the offerings take place in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>None of the organizations that hosts any of the orientations described in this article responded to\u00a0<em>The College Fix<\/em>\u2019s queries for comment.\u00a0<em>The Fix<\/em>\u00a0was specifically seeking information about the \u201cspecific\u201d \u201cneeds\u201d unique to each demographic, a recurring theme of the specialized orientations.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u2018Black Welcome Month\u2019<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Berkeley\u2019s Black Student Orientation \u201caddresses the specific transitional and community needs of African American \/ Black students at Cal,\u201d the school\u2019s website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/orientation.berkeley.edu\/once-here\/special-programs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a>. The orientation consists of community building activities, workshops and a resource fair.<\/p>\n<p>The orientation is hosted by the African American Student Development Center. Apart from the orientation itself, the center sponsors several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/campusclimate.berkeley.edu\/students\/ejce\/aasd\/programs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">events<\/a>\u00a0to welcome new African American students into the school, including \u201cBlack Welcome Month\u201d where African American students can participate in a \u201cWelcome Black Breakfast\u201d and attend alumni talks, a resource fair and social events.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Asian Pacific, Chicano and Latino orientations<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The university also hosts an Asian Pacific Student Orientation, an event which honors Asian American, Filipino and Pacific Islander students.\u00a0Similar to the black student programs, the Asian Pacific orientation \u201caddresses the specific transitional and community needs of Asian American, Pilipinx, and Pacific Islander students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chicanx Latinx Student Development Center likewise hosts a program called \u201cFamilia Orientation\u201d to \u201caddress specific transitional and Community needs of the Chicanx and Latinx students\u201d through \u201cresource fair, community building and speakers.\u201d The orientation was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/campusclimate.berkeley.edu\/students\/ejce\/clsd\/familia-orientation\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">designed<\/a>\u00a0to help students \u201clearn how to thrive on campus as Latinx and Chicanx students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Program for Native students<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the university\u2019s more unique orientations is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/orientation.berkeley.edu\/once-here\/special-programs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Native Student Orientation<\/a>\u00a0which serves Native American students. The Native American Student Development Center also has a recruitment and retention center to increase the number of native students in higher education.<\/p>\n<p>That student center \u201cexists to serve and support the diverse and changing needs of Native students in their time at Cal\u201d and \u201cprovide relevant, accessible and engaging programs and resources, promote intertribal and cross cultural approaches to community building with a social justice lens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Native American Student Development Center has a podcast called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/campusclimate.berkeley.edu\/students\/centers-educational-justice-community-engagement\/native-american-student-development-6\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indigenous United<\/a>which highlights issues Indigenous people face and includes interviews with artists and scholars. The center has even scheduled a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/campusclimate.berkeley.edu\/students\/centers-educational-justice-community-engagement\/native-american-student-development-4\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pow Wow<\/a>\u201d this coming November.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Disabled student orientation is required<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The school\u2019s website states that the university\u2019s orientation for disabled students is \u201cmandatory\u2026for all incoming students with disabilities (freshmen, transfer students, graduate students) who will be connecting with [Disabled Students\u2019 Program] services.\u201d The orientation will teach disabled students about \u201ccampus resources, DSP accommodations, self-advocacy, talking with faculty about accommodations, your legal rights as a student with disabilities, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The orientation offers students with disabilities\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dsp.berkeley.edu\/resources\/services-programs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">services<\/a>\u00a0such as alternative media, auxiliary services and academic accommodations.<\/p>\n<p>Other orientation ceremonies hosted by the university welcome student athletes, international students, Pell Grant students and readmitted students.<\/p>\n<p>The organizations hosting the orientations, meanwhile, offer their target demographics numerous other opportunities on campus. The Asian Pacific Student Center hosts the Asian Pacific Islander Issues Conference every year at Berkeley, according to the website.
