\nAs the\u00a030th anniversary<\/a>\u00a0of the movie\u00a0Dead Poets Society<\/em>\u00a0arrives in June and the\u00a0200th birthday of the American poet Walt Whitman<\/a>\u00a0also passes, fans of the 1989 movie can take a moment to wonder at its inspirational grip.<\/p>\n

The film, considered for some as\u00a0a dramatic highlight of Robin Williams\u2019 career<\/a>, told the story of students from a conservative elite school and their new teacher, John Keating, who delivered passionate recitations of Whitman.<\/p>\n

Keating\u2019s unorthodox methods include teaching while standing on the desks and outside. Under Mr. Keating\u2019s influence, students start to meet out of class time and share their own poems. The last scene of the film shows Keating\u2019s firing in what has become an iconic scene, with students standing up their desks saluting him with a Whitman verse:<\/p>\n

\u201cO Captain! My Captain<\/a>\u00a0\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The movie is about the impact of the teacher-student relationship on the learning process. Mr. Keating is able to develop something special with his students: rapport.<\/p>\n

Rapport is a French word which means\u00a0a harmonious and sympathetic connection in a relationship, producing a kind of bond that produces gains in people\u2019s connection<\/a>. It suggests a kind of click or chemistry between people or groups.<\/p>\n

In my post-doctoral studies, I am examining post-secondary undergraduate students\u2019 perceptions of rapport, and how it impacts their academic performance.<\/p>\n

Understanding rapport<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Rapport is not a personal characteristic but rather a phenomenon that can happen as a result of an\u00a0interaction of people<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Studies of rapport are not new. Sociologists Robert Park and Ernest Burgess examined rapport in their 1924 book\u00a0Introduction to the Science of Sociology<\/em><\/a>. Not long after, scholars began exploring how\u00a0rapport was relevant to student output<\/a>.
\n

\nRapport has been the subject of study beyond education in a variety of fields. Marketing researchers highlight\u00a0the relationship between companies and customers<\/a>, while medical researchers consider the importance of\u00a0physician-patient contact<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Teaching is one of the fields most related to rapport, since a teacher, instructor or professor\u2019s work consists of interpersonal contact with large groups of people most of the time.<\/p>\n

Greater attendance with rapport<\/strong><\/h4>\n

For teachers, the quality of that student-teacher rapport in real life is\u00a0not always a Hollywood fantasy<\/a>\u00a0but research suggests it matters for both student and teacher satisfaction.<\/p>\n

Several studies show positive effects of rapport in student performance. Researchers in the field of psychology have found when undergraduate students experience rapport with professors,\u00a0attendance is greater, students study more, tend to enjoy the subject more and fewer students drop out<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, the positive effects of rapport are not only realized by students. Communications scholars have argued\u00a0rapport produces teaching satisfaction and commitment to the institution<\/a>. The impact of rapport may also\u00a0contribute to reducing classroom conflicts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Verbal and physical immediacy<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Almost everyone has felt rapport with a teacher \u2014 and if so, you probably remember him or her today. Do any of these elements of rapport ring a bell?<\/p>\n

Psychologists focused on body language highlight the role of\u00a0non-verbal behaviour<\/a>\u00a0in increasing interpersonal rapport: think body language such as head nodding or mirroring the other person in posture.<\/p>\n

In an article \u201cDo your students care whether you care about them?\u201d (the answer is yes), psychology researcher Stephen Meyers suggests professors can focus on both\u00a0\u201cverbal immediacy\u201d and \u201cphysical immediacy\u201d<\/a>\u00a0as ways of creating rapport with students: for example, addressing students by their names, using humour, smiling while talking or moving around the room while teaching.<\/p>\n

Meyers also notes that some professors at the university level fear \u201cthey could be too permissive if they connect with their students.\u201d In the age of\u00a0#MeToo it is understandable that attention to ethical and respectful boundaries<\/a>\u00a0is a realistic and appropriate concern. After all, let\u2019s not forget Mr. Keating loses his job.<\/p>\n

So, dear teachers, as life imitates art, put some effort into how you build rapport with your students \u2014 perhaps without walking on students\u2019 desks!<\/p>\n
