\nAfter several months of tensions between the government and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Hungarian academics are\u00a0once again up in arms<\/a>, after the academy banned two conference presentations on\u00a0what many are claiming<\/a>\u00a0to be\u00a0purely political grounds<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to the Hungarian Free Press, one of the talks, which looked at the under-representation of women in the computer science field of open source coding, was\u00a0banned due to<\/a>\u00a0\u201cother aspects of the [theme] of gender\u201d. This ban forms part of the Hungarian government\u2019s ongoing assault on gender studies. These are attacks that have often included\u00a0anti-feminist, misogynistic<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0homophobic comments<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In August, the Hungarian government announced a ban on gender studies within higher education.\u00a0The two universities affected<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Hungary\u2019s oldest university E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd (ELTE), and the Central European University (CEU) founded by George Soros \u2013 were given\u00a0just 24 hours to respond<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Most academics in Hungary are\u00a0civil servants<\/a>, payed for and directly financed by the state. And as of September 2019, gender studies will no longer be funded or recognised by the government. Students enrolled on a current course will be\u00a0able to finish their degrees<\/a>, but no more will be allowed to start.<\/p>\n

The deputy prime minister of Hungary, Zsolt Semj\u00e9n,\u00a0has argued<\/a>\u00a0that nobody wants to be a \u201cgenderologist\u201d. According to Semj\u00e9n, there is no need for the course, and the definition of gender is \u201cnonsense\u201d. Bence R\u00e9tv\u00e1ri, the secretary of human resources, also claimed \u201cthe content of the course is opposed to all of the government\u2019s system of values about humans\u201d. The government blames the\u00a0low number of graduates<\/a>\u00a0and a poor track record of employability for the decision.<\/p>\n

Gender trouble<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Although the expression \u201ct\u00e1rsadalmi nem\u201d (social sex) has been introduced, the word \u201cgender\u201d does not exist in Hungarian. Using the English word in the least anglophone EU country is confusing for many Hungarian people \u2013 which comes in handy to those who want to demonise it. The government not only seems to intentionally use the misleading expression \u201cgender ideology\u201d, but also questions the educational significance of a course that has already been accredited by a professional organisation.
\n
\nThe decision to ban gender studies does not come as much of a surprise to those following the rhetoric of the\u00a0right-wing government<\/a>. This is, however, the most significant of their many attacks on the subject in recent years. At a party congress in December 2015, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 K\u00f6v\u00e9r, one of the founders of the\u00a0Fidesz party<\/a>\u00a0claimed:<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t want the gender craziness. We don\u2019t want to make Hungary a futureless society of man-hating women, and feminine men living in dread of women, and considering families and children only as barriers to self-fulfilment \u2026 And we would like if our daughters would consider, as the highest quality of self-fulfilment, the possibility of giving birth to our grandchildren.<\/em><\/p>\n

So in essence, K\u00f6v\u00e9r suggests that the highest role a woman should aspire to is that of a living womb. Earlier this year, K\u00f6v\u00e9r pushed his views even further.\u00a0He argued<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cgenderism\u201d is \u201can intellectual founding of such a human experiment that is nothing better than, let\u2019s say, eugenics in Nazi times\u201d.<\/p>\n

Assault on feminism< <\/strong>\/h4>
\nGiven this, it is clear that the government\u2019s goal is to directly influence what Hungarian universities deem worthy and unworthy of study \u2013 based on the dominant political ideology. In other words, the government has declared war on academia. And obviously, this sets many dangerous precedents.<\/p>\n

For one thing, this practice is clearly anti-democratic. In fact, it contradicts the Hungarian Constitution,\u00a0which protects academia from government interference<\/a>. For another, setting up \u201cgender\u201d as the enemy of nationalistic ideologies could lead to discrimination on many levels.<\/p>\n

The Hungarian government has also deliberately misrepresented an entire field of study and has attacked\u00a0intellectual freedom<\/a>. By defining strict social expectations regarding roles of women (and men), this rhetoric is an attack on the very idea of gender equality. And it also continues the government\u2019s ongoing\u00a0assaults on feminism<\/a>.<\/p>\n
