In May 2016, I saved this list of 33 examples of the ridiculous things that Donald Trump had said to that point. I am not sure why I did not post it. I suspect that I felt that it was basically impossible to keep up with the avalanche of statements that, intentionally or impulsively, were provoking and distracting the media attempting to cover his candidacy.<\/p>\n
Now, with the advantage of some retrospection, this list seems both a revelation of how clear it should have been of where things were heading and a quaint reminder of a time when our dismay was genuine, rather than a conditioned reflex.<\/p>\n
The title of this post is the original title, and I think that remains very important to remember that what is going on is not some sort of reality television show but our ongoing national history.<\/p>\n
Here, then, is the list of list of 33 examples of the ridiculous things that Donald Trump had said as of May 2016; some remain memorable, but it surprises me how many I did not recollect and have left me shaking my head as if I were reading\u2014\u201chearing\u201d\u2013them for the first time:<\/p>\n
On His Own Wealth\/Wealth<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cThe beauty of me is that I\u2019m very rich.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2013\u201cThe point is, you can never be too greedy.\u201d<\/p>\n On His Own Intelligence<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cMy IQ is one of the highest\u2014and you all know it! Please don\u2019t feel so stupid or insecure; it\u2019s not your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2013\u201cNumber one, I\u2019m not stupid, okay? I can tell you that right now \u2014 just the opposite,\u201d he assured the\u00a0Good Morning Britain<\/em>\u00a0host. \u201cNumber two, in terms of divisive, I don\u2019t think I\u2019m a divisive person. I\u2019m a unifier; unlike our president now, I\u2019m a unifier.\u201d<\/p>\n On His Hands\/Genitals<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cMy fingers are long and beautiful, as, it has been well documented, are various other parts of my body.\u201d On Prominent Women<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cAriana Huffington is unattractive, both inside and out. I fully understand why her former husband left her for a man \u2013 he made a good decision.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2013\u201cRobert Pattinson should not take back Kristen Stewart. She cheated on him like a dog and will do it again\u2013-just watch. He can do much better!\u201d<\/p>\n \u2013\u201cIf I were running \u2018The View\u2019, I\u2019d fire Rosie O\u2019Donnell. I mean, I\u2019d look at her right in that fat, ugly face of hers, I\u2019d say \u2018Rosie, you\u2019re fired.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n On Objectification of Women<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cYou know, it really doesn\u2019t matter what the media write as long as you\u2019ve got a young, and beautiful, piece of ass.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2013\u201cI\u2019ve said if Ivanka weren\u2019t my daughter, perhaps I\u2019d be dating her.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2013\u201cAll of the women on The Apprentice flirted with me\u2013-consciously or unconsciously. That\u2019s to be expected.\u201d On Condescension to Women<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cIf Hillary Clinton were a man, I don\u2019t think she\u2019d get 5% of the vote.\u00a0The only thing she\u2019s got going is the woman\u2019s card.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2013\u201cThanks sweetie. That\u2019s nice.\u201d [Said to a female 9\/11 survivor]<\/p>\n On Breast Feeding<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cYou\u2019re disgusting.\u201d\u00a0[To put this into context, Donald Trump said this to the opposing lawyer during a court case when she asked for a medical break to pump breast milk for her three-month-old daughter.]<\/p>\n On Diet and Weight<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cI have never seen a thin person drinking Diet Coke.\u201d<\/p>\n On His Own Divisiveness<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013He assured the\u00a0Good Morning Britain<\/em>\u00a0host. \u201cIn terms of divisive, I don\u2019t think I\u2019m a divisive person. I\u2019m a unifier; unlike our president now, I\u2019m a unifier.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong>On Mexican Immigration<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cI will build a great wall\u2013-and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me-\u2013and I\u2019ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2013\u201cWhen Mexico sends its people, they\u2019re not sending the best. They\u2019re not sending you, they\u2019re sending people that have lots of problems and they\u2019re bringing those problems with us. They\u2019re bringing drugs. They\u2019re bring crime. They\u2019re rapists\u2026 And some, I assume, are good people.\u201d<\/p>\n On Muslim Americans<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cI was down there, and I watched our police and our firemen, down on 7-Eleven, down at the World Trade Center, right after it came down\u201d<\/p>\n \u2013Trump went on to clarify that his call for a ban on Muslims entering the country was just a \u201csuggestion\u201d \u2014 and most of his Muslim friends think it\u2019s a great one. \u201cI have many Muslim friends. They come over\u2014not all of them, I have to say\u2014I was with one the other day, one of the most successful men. He\u2019s Muslim. He said, \u2018Donald you have done us such a favor. You have brought out a problem that no one wants to talk about.’\u201d<\/p>\n On LGBT Americans:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cI have so many fabulous friends who happen to be gay, but I am a traditionalist.\u201d<\/p>\n On African Americans<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cOur great African-American President hasn\u2019t exactly had a positive impact on the thugs who are so happily and openly destroying Baltimore.\u201d<\/p>\n On Birtherism<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cAn \u2018extremely credible source\u2019 has called my office and told me that Barack Obama\u2019s birth certificate is a fraud\u201d<\/p>\n On American Politics<\/strong> On Politics as Reality Television<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cSorry, there is no STAR on the stage tonight!\u201d<\/p>\n On Social Media\/Tweets<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013\u201cMy Twitter has become so powerful that I can actually make my enemies tell the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u2013\u201cLook at those hands, are they small hands? And, [Republican rival Marco Rubio] referred to my hands: \u2018If they\u2019re small, something else must be small.\u2019 I guarantee you there\u2019s no problem. I guarantee.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u2013\u201cI think the only difference between me and the other candidates is that I\u2019m more honest and my women are more beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u2013\u201cOne of the key problems today is that politics is such a disgrace. Good people don\u2019t go into government.\u201d<\/p>\n
