Shorten’s extra royal commission hearings and legislating the GST carve-up.
It was a week that saw the ABC’s managing director and the chair of its board go, with many questions still to be answered; meanwhile Scott Morrison gave the ongoing controversy over Australia Day a new lease of life.
After a dramatic week at the ABC that sees them without a permanent managing director nor a chair, there remain serious questions about government interference and the broadcaster’s independence.
According to the report, Milne had said that if Guthrie didn’t fire Probyn, she would be jeopardising half a billion dollars in funding for the proposed Jetstream infrastructure project.
The ABC affair – which began with the sacking of Guthrie - spun out of control on Wednesday, following the leaking to Fairfax Media of a highly damaging email, showing Milne’s editorial interference.

O'Connor says Labor remains totally opposed to the government's Ensuring Integrity legislation, which the Coalition wants to resurrect. "I can't see this bill in any way being salvageable."
The budget outcome for 2017-18 shows a deficit of A$10.1 billion – dramatically less than expected in May, and just 0.6% of GDP. In this year’s May budget, a mere four months ago, the outcome for the last…
In a blunt statement, the ABC board has announced the end of Guthrie’s tenure as managing director, declaring it was “not in the best interests” of the organisation for her to continue leading it.
The Newspoll two party vote remains much worse than the last days of Malcolm Turnbull, and the controversy over his ousting continues.
Michelle Grattan speaks with University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor Deep Saini about the week in politics.
Morrison is tactically quicker than Turnbull, just as in his messaging he can cut through more sharply. He’s more attuned to the emotional and knee-jerk drivers of today’s politics.
After fierce attack from Catholic schools over the new funding arrangements, the Morrison government has announced a new $4.6 billion package for non-government schools.
The Greens will try to move a no confidence motion against the home affairs minister, but the numbers are not there for it to succeed - proving government members are united.
The Minister for Jobs and Industrial Relations is set to tell businesses leaders at a summit today that they need to do more to assist the unemployed into jobs.
Morrison is conflicted. It’s risky for him to play down the allegations of standover tactics, let alone fail to take seriously enough the party’s need for more female MPs.
Morrison met with Sudmalis and said she ‘raised a number of genuine concerns’ about her treatment in her local Federal Electoral Conference in the NSW Liberal state division.

Michelle Grattan speaks with Nick Klomp about the week in politics.
The Liberal preselectors of Wentworth have selected Dave Sharma, even though Prime Minister Scott Morrison wanted a female candidate.
View from the crossbench: Cathy McGowan and Rebekha Sharkie on the role of community candidates
McGowan and Sharkie have given the government their confidence until the Wentworth byelection - after which they will consult with their electorates.

He said Quaedvlieg was “someone the Labor Party should not rely on”, calling him “your Godwin Grech”.
We talk about “narratives” in politics. This coup does not have a presentable public “narrative”.
There are three women in the field - Mary-Lou Jarvis, a vice-president of the NSW Liberal party; Katherine O'Regan, a commercial board director, and Maxine Szramka, a rheumatologist.
The Liberal party is also reeling after a massive swing has cost it the previously safe seat of Wagga Wagga in Saturday’s NSW state byelection.
