Make AI Your Study Buddy

A few ways to (responsibly) use AI apps for learning.

Whether you want help creating study guides, flash cards, and quizzes, or you need to turn your scribbled notes into something readable, AI tools can help turbocharge your learning.

Having trouble deciding which app is right for you? Here’s how they stand out as educational helpers.

Gemini can create a study plan for your semester.

Create the perfect study schedule

Chatbots like Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude can draft a customized study plan and add key dates to your calendar. Upload your macroeconomics syllabus, for example, and specify that you want to take weekends and Thursday nights off; the apps will suggest when to get started on big papers and when to kick your studying up a notch ahead of midterms.

Star students: Gemini’s AI agent Spark and ChatGPT’s Scheduled mode can check when your notes and syllabi get updated in Google Drive or Google Docs—and adjust your personalized study plan accordingly.

Prerequisites: Connect Gemini or ChatGPT to your calendar and Google Drive in the apps’ settings menus. Paid subscribers can find Spark in Gemini’s main menu and Scheduled mode in ChatGPT’s menu.

Review the course material

With Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT, you can upload all of your class notes and readings into a Project folder to brush up on the material through an informal text chat.

Star students: ChatGPT’s Study mode acts like a friendly tutor, offering mnemonic tricks to help you remember facts and asking you to explain your answers. Gemini takes things a step further with Study Notebooks. After uploading your class materials, it gives you a diagnostic to assess your strengths and weaknesses. There’s also a progress dashboard to track what you need to work on.

Prerequisites: To access ChatGPT’s Study mode, tap + > Plugins > Study. Give Study Notebooks a try by going to Gemini’s main menu, tapping New Notebook, selecting Study, and uploading relevant files.

Bring your class notes to life with images and graphics.

Convert your handwritten notes

Snap a photo of your handwritten notes to convert your scribbles into a study guide.

Star students: ChatGPT and Gemini make it a cinch to visualize your class notes, whether it’s about mid-century architecture or the life cycle of a butterfly. Or convert handwritten notes into text and get an organized summary in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or the digital notebooks Goodnotes and Notability. In Goodnotes, select the Lasso, circle your writing, and tap it to see the option to convert to text. In Notability, find the Handwriting Conversion feature in the main menu.

Prerequisites: You’ll need a subscription to ChatGPT and Gemini to increase the number of images you can generate in a study guide. Goodnotes and Notability require paid plans for unlimited text conversion.
