I used to love Evernote. I don’t use it for business per se, but I need to find info when I need it! Not 5 minutes after I started searching for it in the app. I had EVERYTHING, EVERY THING in Evernote but couldn’t find things because it would NOT show info within notes that I was searching for. Also, I had some notes that I had unknowingly put the title in quotes! That was a big mistake. Even when I KNEW it was in Evernote, I could not access it. Very frustrating. I finally ended up parting ways with Evernote. Now comes the bad news. I had over a thousand notes! There is NO WAY to export your contents!!!! I had to literally copy EACH NOTE and place in Apple Notes. What a huge pain. Then I went on a long and fruitless search for a note program that would do everything evernote was doing. Well, I’m back again. There were several deal breakers for other programs. Even though evernote is not perfect it still seems to be the best option that I could find. I am very careful to specifically title notes with key words. You cannot get Evernote to download everything. I can try to download an article and most times I get only a link. This puts me in the same predicament I was in initally! I cannot access the ‘cloud’ at all times and I work in a hospital!!! Lots of lead shielding and the like. I have to go in paragraph by paragraph and copy/paste into evernote to have access to it when the cloud is absent. I hate the ‘cloud’.

I’ve been using Evernote for at least 7 years, but it has mostly ended up as a side show to to my workflow, despite many attempts to make it a central repository for my work. When I started consulting, I looked at it as an opportunity to use Evernote more fully in my workflow, tracking clients, calls, meetings, etc. I set up tags and notebooks but it never seemed to quite work. Is each client a tag or a notebook? Without a calendar function, how can I track progress against a timeline? Reminders pop up once, but there’s not a snooze function, nor is there a place to see when your reminders are scheduled in a calendar. I tried plug-ins or IFTTT to make Evernote work with Google calendars to no avail. Then, documents for clients have to be in Word or Excel or PDF, so why should I do them in Evernote? And if I did want to share drafts of things in Evernote, the sharing a note experience is awful if the client is not in Evernote too. And I can’t do calculations in Evernote, so my billing and invoicing has to be done elsewhere too. Finally, they released this update and I thought, "OK, well at least the design will improve, and the desktop will look more like the web version (which is clean and much more visually appealing, like the iPhone app)". But...nope. As far as I can tell, all that changed is the icon. So, for me, I think I’ll go back to using it as a repository of things I find on the internet.

I paid for this app and I am quite disappointed. In the beginning it was great. I could keep track of all my notes and interviews and web articles and even started using is for my to do list. It was my one stop productivity app and I really liked it. It had some issues that annoyed me, like not being able to search within a note or notebook without searching the entire app, and slow syncing and not being able to share entire notebooks with colleagues. But it was good enough. Now, the thing just freezes up. Customer service is non-existent. They leave users to troubleshoot themselves, which is frustrating considering this app costs $80 a year. And now it's not syncing from my phone to the computer. Some times I lose the notes I've taken on the previous day once it does actually sync because it sync's from the wrong device. If the company actually cared about this app or had better developers who knew what they were doing this woul be a powerhouse. Unfortuneately, it's become a major waste of time for me as I spend the first 15 mins of my work day trying to get this app to work. And now I'm wasting my time telling you not to buy it, which takes a lot for me to review something. The lack of customer service suggests the company only cares about money and not a great product. TL;DR Don't waste your time on this buggy app. Use Workflowy for to do lists. Use your calendar to organize your days. Use G drive for notes. The only use this app has is webclipper, and even that is buggy. Come back to this app when the company updates it or begins to care about the product and the users.

Evernote is one of those apps that for the past half decade has not added more than a half dozen useful features. Its service quality has been completely stalled. Like Microsoft products, Evernote also controls what users can do, and often in the silliest ways, hamstringing users rather than enabling their creativity. You can link Google Drive files to Evernote (presumably so Evernote doesn’t have to pay to store them on their servers) but you can’t back up your Evernote files to Google Drive. In the Evernote iOS app there is no way to directly copy or export an audio file recorded in Evernote. Let's say you are want to work with that file on your laptop but you have no internet. There’s no way to do it because Evernote requires internet to transfer attachments out of notes. These are the kinds of things that Evernote goes month after month not improving, and instead they come out with inane bug fixes doing things like ‘improving emojis.’ They release new features like ‘Spaces’ which aren’t useful if the main ‘space’ of Evernote is so subpar. I have also had unpredictable syncing issues—coming back from important trips with important data, and then having that data get all scrambled upon sync. What a mess. Ontop of all this, Evernote raised its price this year. Three years ago Yale University dropped Evernote subscriptions for its faculty and staff. Now I understand why. The service underperforms. I will be dropping Evernote this year after six years of use.

I used the app for the very first time today. The promotional material indicated that it is compatible with Windows, Mac and ios. What it doesn’t mention is that some features you PAY ADDITIONAL for for are NOT compatible with all three. I spent over an hour with a terrible customer service agent via chat. I clearly explained that I was using this on a windows device and on a Mac and I could not get PDF annotation to work. After over an hour of troubleshooting, he determined that PDF annotation does NOT work on the web version either through MAC or Windows. For Mac you need to dowload the app to get this function to work. It doesn’t work on windows at all. After the royal waste of time, I imported a PDF to evernote to edit a document. The app crashed 8 times… SInce I had paid to upgrade to premium, I stuck with it. There was more bad news. When editing PDF’s, the highlighting option doesn’t work well. You can do a free hand highlight - or you can hold down the shift key to get a straight highlight. But the highlight does not go to the end of the sentence. It stops in the middle and you can only do one line at a time. It was EXCRUTIATING having to manually adjust every single line that needed to be highlighted. It’s a neat idea but execution was absolutely AWFUL. I wasted a good portion of my study day on this app and I am really annoyed. I’m guessing that folks that are such big fans of the app, don’t need the additional features. Find another app, this one is terrible as is support for issues that come up.

Update: Although it's gotten better, there are still painful issues with Evernote that should force you to look elsewhere. Issue 1: Evernote doesn't listen to its users. Look at all the review on this app store section -- not a single response to any of them. More importantly, issues that are raised for months on end are ignored while new, half-baked features are introduced. Issue 2: Syncing remains a joke. Expect that large chunks of work you've completed on your Mac will never appear on your iOS devices, and vice versa. Issue 3: Tasks is an outright joke. Designed by kindergardners, it too suffers from sync issues. Set up a few tasks on your Mac. Wait two days. Maybe, maybe those tasks will show up on your iOS device. Maybe. By then, you should've crossed those tasks off your list. Just terrible.I've been using Evernote for years, but took a break last year. Came back in December and purchased a premium subscription. Bi-i-i-ig mistake. Syncing is terrible. Duplicate notes materialize for no reason. Important notes disappear. The app freezes at critical moments on my iPhone and iPad, and won't work until I've turned off the device and turned it back on.I want so badly to love and use this app, but Evernote, you've broken my heart. Unusuable for now. I've switched to Ulysses until they get this thing fixed. Evernote, you owe me $50.

Update: there is no update. Other than the fact that I have been using this closer to 20 years, it's still incredible that basic functionality often just plain doesn't work. The web clipper will work for one release, and then it's broken on the next one. It loses track of the association of attached files and the notes that reference them. They keep adding features that don't address basic functionality, and put their resources there instead of making sure that the product works: every time, every release. I'v almost finished putting everythhing into DevonThink, and as soon as it's all there, I'll stop paying for a Premium subscription that I have had since the day they started that model. It's not that it's terrible; it's that it is terrible in the lack of regression testing. Functionality that I've depended on for almost 20 years all of a sudden just doesn't work at all for one or two update releases.... love-hate frustration. The progression of the system is one step forward, two steps back some releases, and two forward, one back in others. There's some basic functionality which used to work well, which is now barely usable. The ability to mark a note as precious, so it can't be inadvertently modified, has finally been partly implemented with a kludge, but that took so long to arrive that I've finally retired, so have no further use for the product in a business context. Throughout the many years I worked as a consultant, I was forced to advise my clients that Evernote might well be great some day, but that it simply was not industrial-strength.

TL;DR: There is no way to contact a human--via phone or even email--unless you pay for the upgrade. And, if you have an issue with the upgrade, you're out of luck. Story: I have been using this on my phone for a few years and have liked it. The UI is a bit unintuitive, and the dictation is not great, but it's been pretty solid. I toyed with the idea of upgrading, but kept putting it off. Then, I decided to try using it on my MacBook, so I downloaded it. I thought I would need to upgrade so I could use both laptop and phone (forgot an old phone was still connected to the account), so I paid the sale price and upgraded... or so I thought. The upgrade never showed up on either my phone or my laptop (after hours, not minutes, of waiting, though it showed up on my bank account right away). I tried contacting them to figure it out, but there is no way to contact a human--via phone or even email--if you have an issue. Nowhere to offer feedback, except here. Not even one of those annoying chatbots. How do they expect you to resolve complicated issues? You have to pay, of course. You must upgrade to have access to a person. But, if your upgrade fails to go through, you're apparently out of luck. Because I paid via Apple, my only recourse was to go to Apple and request a refund. I know everyone is trying to avoid paying for customer service staff, but sometimes there are issues that can only be resolved by talking to a person. Call me crazy, but it seems like that should still be an option.I later figured out that I didn't need the upgrade to use it on my laptop and, after this experience, I'm not interested in giving them my money in the future. :(

Having used Evernote for about 11 years I was anxiously awaiting this much touted update to what has been a rather tired (although rock solid) UI for some time. Some of the upgrades such as an easier to read font and a streamlned tagging system are positives. Additionally the web-clipper function is still stellar. Unfortunately however, this update misses on more levels than it scores. For example one critical feature that has been removed is the ability to create what used to be called a "Classic Link". This feature allowed users to connect to a note from a 3rd Party application (e.g. Todoist or Omnifocus) without the need for an internet connection or reliance on the Evermote web version as long as Evernote was installed on the same device. While there is still a menu option to "create internal link" it does not function as such and actually creates a web-based link instead. Another area where I had been anxiously hoping for modernization was in support for Apple Pencil and markup ability. Other apps (e.g. Goodnotes and Notability) long ago surpassed Evernote's support for easy markup and Apple Pencil. Based on my initial experience with the new version however, Apple Pencil support for marking up documents and pdf seem to still be stuck in the past.

I’ve been using Evernote since 2013, primarily for organization in a public works environment. Its nice to have access to my data on my various devices and platforms - in general, my offices are PC environments while I use a MAC. Evernote syncs between all easily. For the past 2 years I have used the product for construction inspection services using my iPhone or iPad. I can record weather, crew members, and then dictate the daily progress throughout the day. Adding pertineint files (email, texts, plans, etc) in chronological order is also helpful. I can also use captioned photos to document progress for the day.My only problem so far is sharing the data with non users. Moving to a paperless environment is great and I endorse this concept, but some offices/agencies require that "piece of paper”. Printing a file with photos cuts the photo at the end of a page and resumes printing the photo on the next page. I wish this be addressed. But overall, Evernote is very convenient for documenting these activities and for organizing my business and personal life. We all carry a phone and Evernote is on my phone.
