Ruud EcoNet

The inconsistency of this app working is amazing. It won’t auto update even if you delete the app and reinstall it. You have to go back in just to see if there’s an update and that’s why you haven’t been able to connect in days.. And it doesn’t take long before it starts up again, either the Apple won’t open at all or it just sits there clocking. And even when it does open half the time when you change the temperature it just revert right back. And even when it does work, it has the minimal functional use.
I wish I had known the app & digital thermostat were this bad BEFORE I purchased a Ruud HVAC system. Because I would have purchased a different HVAC system instead. I agree with all the other bad reviews on here. But I will add one thing - the simple fact that you cannot use the app to access the digital thermostat, while being AWAY from home is insane. That is the most basic function of every other digital thermostat available (e.g. Nest). Otherwise, what is the point of having a digital thermostat?
As a user of the Ruud EcoNet app, I find myself compelled to express my disappointment, resulting in this two-star review. The lack of integration with Apple Home or HomeKit is a significant oversight in today’s smart home ecosystem. This missing feature diminishes the app’s utility and convenience, which is a substantial letdown for users invested in the Apple ecosystem.Furthermore, the transition from the older version of the app to the current one was poorly managed. There was a distinct absence of communication or a seamless update process. Many of us were left unaware of the new app’s existence until we faced functionality issues with the older version. This lack of foresight led to unnecessary inconvenience, as users had to independently search for and adapt to the new application. The decision to launch this as a completely new app, rather than an update to the existing one, resulted in a disconnection with the user base.I am open to revising my review to a full five stars, should these concerns be addressed in future updates. The potential for a first-rate user experience is there, but it requires a commitment to user-friendly practices and a deeper integration with widely-used smart home systems.
This app delivers the basics pretty well: scheduling is well designed (provides up to 4 user-defined periods per day), and calculates daily energy consumption, which it reports by hour, day, week and month. But it falls short on multiple fronts:1. Status is confusing - developers didn’t allow enough space to display a full description. 2. Hot water level is completely bogus and inconsistent. After showing “full” and system in standby, I drew one gallon to take a temperature measurement. It then reported 2/3rds full (for a 65 gallon tank). Many times the system is in standby, yet the indicator shows any where from “empty “ to 2/3rds full. Have learned to completely ignore, since regardless of what’s displayed we have yet to run out of hot water. 3. The hourly energy usage graph seems to display every other hour for the current day, but every hour is displayed for the previous day, suggesting it’s a programming error. I have reported these issues to the manufacturer over a week ago, but have yet to get any kind of a response. PS. The heater itself is amazing. The installed cost was about the same as to replace a failing oil fired heater, while it’s operating costs are about 1/4th the cost of oil - in a state with high energy costs !

I’ve seen a lot of low ratings for this app. Everyone has different needs and circumstances, but I can share that the app has not crashed for me and has worked great. It provides quick updates when I open it. The changes take effect almost immediately. It gets the job done. I have a new Ruud furnace and AC connected to it. The only thing I wish it had was the option to randomly circulate the fan. I can select about six fan speeds, so I have it set to low fan only at certain times of the day/night. One benefit this app has over my last WiFi t stat is the “auto” feature. No more switching from furnace to AC in the transition months. Just set it and forget it!

I used to lose the connection to my water heater every few days and would have to repeat the setup process. I had rated earlier versions of the app 1 star because it was totally useless. It’s a lot better now, I haven’t had to set it up again in a few months. The interface design is clean but has some issues where there is not enough space to show the info—“design over functionality” unfortunately. For example it shows “Compress…” in the status. Does that conclude with “… running” or “… failed” or ? There’s tons of white space which is nice, but when you can’t actually read what you need, that’s a problem. It’s also much worse if I use a zoomed display mode or larger type options.

I’ve been using this app for a couple of years with my heat pump water heater. While it has had some improvements, there are still dumb things like with 6.6, it gets stuck in away mode. But my real disappointment is the scheduling that doesn’t work right. My goal is scheduling is to stop the water heater from running on peak which is 4pm-9pm every day. And to encourage it to heat the water from 10am-3pm when there excess solar electricity generation. I’ve tried many different schedules including setting it to off from 4pm-9pm. Yet more often than not, I find the compressor running after 4pm. I tried support once, but the person I emailed with had no knowledge of how scheduling works. And the company that sold and installed the water heater for me doesn’t know the app either.

App constantly has to be hard closed (swiping up to close out) and re opened in order to show accurate temp and have connection. When you open the app, it consistently takes a literal 20 seconds to show any stats. Then, when you want to come back to the app after some time, you’ll reliably have to hard close and re open it again in order for the stats to update. A fundamentally garbage UX. I have 1000mbps internet and full WiFi signal w/ great placement of my router. It’s the app itself, not any other cause. Plenty of reviews here are similar.Pay your engineers and software engineers competitively to attract top talent. Value them, and this stuff won’t happen. This cleary is not happening at Rheem

Upfront - setting a geofence necessary to automatically transition to “away” setting based on iPhone location does not work at all. Support has been unable to fix it in 4 weeks! While the app supports having multiple users with their phones registered, it is unclear whether the app has sufficient logic to only switch to away setting if all users/phones are outside the geofence. The app does not show whether the heater is currently heating nor any other operating state of your HVAC system other than your set values and the humidity values which are regularly out of sync with what the physical thermostat displays. On a positive note, setting schedules is simpler though, the app than on the thermostat. So all in all, disappointing. Top items that would make this more useful - fix the geofencing, ensure the app can deal with multiple users, show the current operating states (running or not?), show new layer of operating data - e.g. outside temp, return air temp, heat/cool stage - and make sure the app is actually in sync with the thermostat.
This app is very unreliable. I use it to control a water heater. Sometimes the water heater does not follow the schedule I have set causing us to run out of hot water. At times I have the water heater set to off. But now, because of an update I suppose, instead of being off the water heater is disabled so that now I cannot see how much hot water is in the tank. The usage data appears to be unreliable. During times when the water heater is off (well, now disabled) the app shows I still use a significant amount of electricity. At times the app (or water heater, I can’t tell which) becomes totally unresponsive. The only way to fix that is to throw the breaker. Anyway, as you can tell, I’m not a happy camper.
