I think that duo lingo is an amazing and fun app to learn different languages. It’s definitely not what I expected, I thought it would be boring and bland but it gave a pleasant surprise. There is only one problem though and I believe I’m not the only person having this problem. My problem is with the leadership boards. I feel they shouldn’t exist. Humans are naturally competitive but it is very easy for us the same humans to get discouraged. When you’re giving it your all and your low on the leadership board it’s very discouraging. And that’s why I stopped using the app. It gets to a point where you’re like you don’t care anymore. It’s an amazing app but that leadership board is the only problem. If it can be taken out and another new feature added maybe one where players can interact with one another. I bet a lot of people who have felt discouraged by the leadership board will come back. But all in all it is the best app to learn a foreign language. I’m heavily impressed.

First of all, I would like to commend Duolingo for making learning fun and quite productive but where I feel you guys get things wrong is when you wipe out people’s streaks just for not being on the app for a while. A while ago, I was busy preparing for my travel ; I spent the whole night packing and barely got any sleep. Upon getting to my destination after a long tiresome journey, I slept off as I was too fatigued to even do ANYTHING on my phone. The next day I felt horribly sick and this prolonged for 2 days. When I mustered up a little energy to save my almost 2 YEARS STREAK!! I opened the app, and how was I greeted, with a total wipeout of my hard work of 2 whole years. I wasted 2 years of my life just for my sweat and tireless devotion to be overlooked all because I didn’t waste my data on you guys for one week, ONE WEEK. It’s not like I missed my lessons for months. ONE WEEK was all it took for these ingrates to snatch my streak and to think that they would look at all my dedication to their app and at all my achievements and be humane. Even though that’s how it was programmed, it’s still very inconsiderate. If you guys are sensible and not conceited, you would change such a harsh program. I know people who stopped using your app because of the anxiety it gave them. God forbid ! How can I be tied to an app as if it’s my life? I’m done being emotionally attached to you guys. Anyway, that’s all of my complaints for now.

Okay this app is one of the best apps I’ve got but there’s a problem I want to address. Actually, I just started using it yesterday and I got to section1 unit2. But some are not playing so I had to jump that unit because of that particular level that refused to play and it’s annoying because some things I need to learn might be on that level but I jumped it because it refused to play. And also for us that are not using super you guys should help us by adding the number of gems we get cause I’ve been playing this game since but I only have 146 gems and it’s not fair cause we’ve only got five hearts and if we exhaust the hearts we’ll either exit the game and wait for some hours or use gems to buy hearts and that’s no nice cause most of us using this app are teenagers and we’re not yet working to make money to buy gems. So please look for a way to solve these problems cause if I experience this same thing (some levels are not playing) in the next unit that I’m jumping to I’ll angrily quit playing this game. Thanks. 🙏🙏

I like Duolingo a lot, I’m one of those who are extremely grateful that such an app exists. However, I think the idea of having a leaderboard is a huge distraction from the main purpose of the app, which is learning! I literally stopped using the app for about a year, and only returned when the need to learn a new language arose. The leaderboard gives that game-ish feel, and for someone who has tried to be in top 3 for 9 times consecutively, I know exactly what I am saying. People are just probably rushing through the lessons and the XP challenges to increase XPs not necessarily to learn. Someone in my leaderboard last week played over 7,000XPs in one day just to displace the person at the number one position, and I couldn’t help but wonder if the person was genuinely learning or just there to compete and play games. I hope you guys see this and consider making the app 100% about learning. Alternatively, you can give the option to opt out of the leaderboard for whoever might not be interested and find alternative ways to demote people to the lower league. Thank you!!

Look… Duo is my 13th reason. I’m literally just seeping tears because I was in top 5 then someone replaced me and I did mine and got it back just at the last three minutes… I was doing another lesson but my sister shouted at me cause I was supposed to do something and she just wouldn’t wait for me to finish the lesson… fast forward I finished and boom time was already up and somehow that person got in top five again instead of me and abandoned me at the obsidian level… how unfair is that?? Today is like my only day off from activities of the week (work, other work) and I spent all day just so I could meet up and look at me now not even caring that there’s soup all over my hand… just here crying. Thanks a lot, thanks a whole lot for the leaderboard that has not let me just have peace and enjoy my learning… without it, I would’ve done so much more y’know?? I just want to uninstall this app but I know I have to continue learning cause it’s one of my passions but thank you oh so much for ruining that for me duo… and they say you are smart in the French section lol…. It’s very painful to me… signing off, a 16 year old with a 74 day streak and seven top threes… Glorylove. P.S I hate you so dam much

I've tried coming back to Duolingo multiple times because I genuinely want to learn Korean, but I end up quitting for the same reason every time.My biggest issue is that the app doesn't actually teach beginners before testing them. It throws me straight into questions in Korean without first explaining the alphabet, vocabulary, grammar, or sentence structure. As someone with no prior knowledge, I'm basically guessing. How am I supposed to know what I'm answering if I haven't been taught yet?To make things more frustrating, getting questions wrong costs hearts, which means I'm being penalized for not knowing something the app never explained in the first place.I wish Duolingo included proper beginner lessons before quizzes—short videos, written explanations, or interactive lessons in a language I already understand. Teach the concept first, then test my understanding. That's how most people learn in school, and I think it would make the app much more accessible to complete beginners.I'm sure the current approach works for some people, but for learners starting from absolute zero, especially with languages like Korean, it feels discouraging rather than educational. I really wanted this app to work for me, but unfortunately, I'm giving up on it again.

The change from hearts to energy has to be the most useless update. You guys should just make the app fully subscription at this point. I can’t even do up to three lessons before I’m out. I never make mistakes and the energy keeps reducing for nothing. I don’t see the use of the perfect lessons badge anymore. Majority of the people using your app are students with no means to pay that outrageous amount. I mean 45k per year???? And also you guys should introduce a way to freeze your streak for a long time. I’m currently on a year plus streak but I can’t keep doing this everyday like my life depends on it. My phone could get stolen or I could just need a break from my phone and you guys would just wipe away my year plus streak. Please remove the limit of the streak freeze so I can buy the amount I want. I really loved this app and also introduced many people to it but now it’s just BS. Even the music section has stopped working. P.S find a better language learning app to anyone reading this, this app gets worse by the day

Duolingo is an amazing app to learn to new languages no doubt But why can’t we have unlimited lives? So when I get some questions wrong and I run out of lives, I have to wait till the following day before the hearts bank becomes full again? It’s very unnecessary. I don’t mind watching ads but the hearts/lives should be unlimited no matter the plan. Either free or paid. And secondly, what’s the meaning of the leadership board? I was forced to learn almost 100 words in a day just to meet up with the top three on the leaderboard. At that point, I honestly felt like abandoning the app and moving on to others that don’t include unnecessary competition and where I don’t have to wait a whole day to learn just because my hearts finished. Please look into these issues. They’re very annoying. Your app is amazing, do not allow these flaws ruin all your hard work.

Can you please look into adding Lithuanian to the languages you offer. Also, look into locking a level if a user has played it over 10 times without crossing to the next. That’s what usually done when one is just focused on keeping a streak and not learning anymore. Also, please look into teaching a language from the root up, like complexities of its letters, the vowels and consonants, things like that, focusing on grammar a little before jumping to vocabulary. Then ask for the profession of users so that they can have vocabulary tailored to their way of life first of all or a specific section dedicated for that. If you could have sections dedicated to external resources for a particular language added in form of videos, podcasts, etc. If you ever take any of this into consideration and end up doing it because my suggestions helped, please tag me in the future @_iamrhema on instagram. It absolutely makes no sense that with every answer to a question while doing a lesson, I lose energy. I take lessons and halfway through I can’t continue on because my energy is depleted. So I have to either buy energy which is unnecessarily expensive or I quit the lesson and wait 5 hours to fill or I have to watch ads. Makes so sense. I downloaded Duolingo so I could learn and practice Spanish at my own time and convenience for how long I wanted to. Now I can only do two lessons in less than 10 minutes and wait for 24 hours before it gets full to start another one. Is this a marketing plan to get people to pay for Super or Max? Most people can’t afford to pay for them, being from certain countries with high conversion rates. You need to be thoughtful and considerate before developing plans and implementing them as new updates. Some people are still on the app only because it would be devastating to lose their streaks. Do better
