Quietus is a real-time parametric synthesizer for ambient sound — every sound is generated live by two synthesis voices controlled by user-editable parameters, with optional binaural beat layers and time-based parameter automation. Endlessly evolving, no audio files, no playlists.
Most ambient apps play recorded clips on repeat. You might not notice the seam right away, but your brain does. Quietus computes sound from scratch using noise generators, multi-mode filters, and LFO modulation. The result is sound that keeps going without ever cycling back to the beginning.

THE SYNTHESIS ENGINE
Two synthesis voices run in parallel, each with its own filter (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, or notch at 12 or 24 dB/oct), resonance, stereo panning, and a pair of LFOs. Choose a noise color for each voice — white, pink, brown, blue, or violet — generated live, not filtered from a loop. Then shape the movement: every LFO has a selectable destination, so you can route modulation to filter cutoff, high-pass, resonance, level, pan, or another LFO's rate. A stereo ping-pong delay and a lookahead limiter sit at the end of the chain.
BINAURAL BEATS
Optional dual-frequency tones layered into your soundscape, with a carrier from 100 to 400 Hz and a beat frequency from 0.5 to 40 Hz. Two dedicated LFOs can gently drift the carrier, the beat frequency, or the level so the entrainment keeps evolving. Binaural beat frequencies in the delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma ranges have been studied for their associations with relaxation, sleep onset, focused attention, and alertness. Headphones recommended; the binaural effect requires stereo separation.
JOURNEY AUTOMATION
Program your sound to change over time. Set waypoints with target values for any of 15+ parameters, pick an interpolation curve (linear, ease-in, ease-out, ease-in-out, or step), and press play. Quietus handles the transitions, and your LFOs keep moving on top of the automation. A 90-minute sleep journey might begin in alpha frequencies with filtered noise, then drift toward delta with darker filters before fading to silence.
When a journey is running, you can grab any slider to take over manually. Let go and the sound glides back to where the journey says it should be.

Presets ship in 6 categories — Focus, Sleep, Meditation, Relaxation, Creativity, and Custom. Every parameter is saved, including any embedded journey. Build your own and export them as .quietuspreset files, or bundle several into a .quietuspack to share. On devices with Apple Intelligence, Image Playground can generate cover art for your presets.
