Earthquake notifications. An earthquake in Japan? You will know. Turn them on from the Alerts tab and get a notification a few minutes after the shaking, from shindo 4 up, with the magnitude and how hard it was felt. Pick your own threshold, or turn it off again any time. This is a report, not an early warning. It arrives minutes after the quake, and it is built for people watching Japan from far away rather than standing in it.

Fixes. • The guide library was quietly emptying itself as the app synced: all 26 guides are back, and they stay. • Guides removed from the site now disappear cleanly from the app.

Photographs, full size. • Tap any photo in a story to fill the screen: pinch to zoom, drag to explore the detail, swipe between every photo in the piece. Turn the phone sideways for the wide shots. • Settings now lives in the tab bar. • A home screen with room to breathe: more space, a reworked header, and the seasonal row finally shows that it scrolls. • Season tiles now show their photographs instead of hiding them under a wash of colour. • Photos fade in gently instead of snapping out of a grey box. • Fixed: Today's discovery sometimes appeared without its thumbnail.
