A proper dive computer for Apple Watch Ultra
OceanWave2026
I am an experienced recreational diver and have done over 700 dives. In Dec 25, I used the Mares App on my Apple Watch Ultra 2 as a secondary dive computer alongside my Suunto EON Core for a 10-dive trip in Cozumel, Mexico, and it genuinely impressed me.Setup was fast and intuitive: Nitrox (32%), gradient factors, alarms and basic configuration were all quick to enter, and once underwater it behaved exactly like a real dive computer should. Depth, NDL, ascent rate, alarms and surface data all tracked accurately, and the dive profiles matched very closely with my Suunto.Where this app really stands out is post-dive logging. It automatically logged my dive sites (Santa Rosa Wall, Tormentos Reef, Cedral Wall, San Clemente, Palancar Gardens, etc), complete with depth profiles, heart rate, temperature, gradient factors and clean charts. The maps and site tagging worked flawlessly, and syncing back to the iphone was stable and fast. After years of half-baked Apple Watch dive apps, this finally feels like a serious dive product built by a real dive manufacturer rather than a fitness app pretending to be a dive computer.I took the 3-day trial and subscribed before the trip was over. I now trust it as a genuine backup dive computer, and for many recreational dives it could easily be used as primary.Highly recommended for any Apple Watch Ultra diver.

I wanted to give this a try as an alternative to the Oceanic+ app to use my Apple Watch as a dive computer. In short, it’s not yet ready for use. Problems included: 1. It did not actually automatically start at the start of the dive (yes, I’d swapped auto-start over from Oceanic+), meaning if I’d been relying on this I’d have been without a dive computer for the entire dive and its record of my nitrogen levels would have been wrong for subsequent dives. Manually starting once underwater also failed.2. There were numerous problems with setup - it wouldn’t sync with my phone, the terms and conditions screen crashed repeatedly until I created an account, metrics settings weren’t carried across correctly.3. Some settings are non-sensical, e.g. the lowest depth alarm you can set is 31m. Why is this limited? And why not at least let me set the limit at 40m in line with recreational diving qualifications?I don’t recommend using this app in its current state, save your free trial until they’ve had some time to fix the bugs.

Don't use it to update the firmware, it will brick the computer
ReluctantiPhoneUser
I allowed this software to update the firmware on my Smart Air computer when it prompted me to do so.The firmware download failed at 12% and left the computer in an unusable bootloader state. I've tried to reinstall the fimrware a dozen or so times, but the download always fails at varying percentages of completeness. It's pretty shocking that Mares would release software that renders its dive computers unusable if you make the mistake of trying to use it.
