Cinephilia ranges from the appreciation of basic entertainment to high art, where often films of lesser popularity can often be lost to time. Letterboxd offers a place where said films are able to come back to life and be reintroduced to the archive era’s generation (Gen-Z) where social media has determined the film mainstream rather than the films itself. An app like Letterboxd offers enough function for everyone no matter the user. Their most notable feature being logging films with their easy to navigate diary, other important features include lists, reviews, and an entire structured social media-like interface. I believe that without Letterboxd, the future of filmmaking would be far worse than it is now. Better exposure to formalist films has always been the drive for the creation of new art, and many members of the archive era would not access the likes of Ford or Welles or even Chaplin without the push of Letterboxd.

I downloaded the app a little while ago and as a film lover, this app is perfect. I can keep track of the films I have watched and share my opinion and thoughts about them. I found out about of lots of films through this app that have now become my favourites. This app is truly perfect for movie lovers, I find it better to use than IMBD as it’s more simpler and the app is easy to navigate through in its entirety. However, one suggestion I have is to include the age ratings of each film. The little coloured circle with the age badge should be displayed next to or beneath the title of each movie you click on. I think this would be a helpful aspect and a really great tool for the app. I know myself and others sometimes struggle to find the age ratings of movies so I feel this would be a really helpful guide to this app.

Letterboxd is the best app where you can rate, review and make lists on movies. I love the layout, and find it much more enjoyable to use than IMDb. I know a lot of people complain about there being no TV shows on it but personally I prefer it that way! There are so many awesome features that have really helped me discover so many films I wouldn’t have otherwise known about. I also love that a Pro letterboxd membership is actually worth the price, however not having a membership doesn’t impact app enjoyment either (like you get with a lot of other apps). Letterboxd is by far my favourite app and if you’re into cinema you should not hesitate to download it!
